COHi:  I agree with you about having a meat packer plant on the layout.  Think of the operational additions that you could make to justify the plant.  First, of course, you would use stock cars to bring in the cattle, swine or poultry to the slaughter house.  Then you'd certainly need a fleet of reefers to ship the finished product to market.  And you'd also need a box car periodically to bring in the packaging materials.  Special Box cars were also used to haul hides to a tannery, as well. They would also be used to ship canned product.  You'd need an occasional hopper car for coal for the power house and for heating and processing the meats.  Finally, you'd need a tank car to haul away some of the waste product.

As far as completing an industry, you would need stock pens located along your branch lines to hold cattle for those stock cars.  Of course, the actual slaughter house facility would need stock pens as well.  You'd need a food distributors to receive the processed meat at it's market.  There are, of course, more potential ancillary buildings and businesses that could be added for more diversified operation potential like the above mentioned tannery.

And then, the big thing with a stock yards, slaughter houses and tanneries is that they all smell pretty bad, so perhaps Menard's could develop a really stinky smoke fluid and incorporate a smoke unit into the factory building itself!

Vat Car?  And this building is perfect to have a GERMAN Shepherd guarding it.

Colorado Hirailer:  Those are some great pictures of pickle and vat cars for the sauerkraut plant.  I got mine yesterday.  Is this a great country or what, when I was at the checkout the young gal informed me that if it fits in a Menard's bag, I get 15% off.  I obtained a bag from customer service and got the 15% off!  Now I have a reason to park some of my vat cars that Lionel did In the 50's and K Line did in the last few years of its existence, at the sauerkraut plant (OK Heinz did pickles not sauerkraut, but what the heck).  Now all I need is MEGASTEAM to make sauerkraut sent in the their smoke's.  I am German, have a lot of German friends (who are not model railroaders), and they will really get a kick out of this one.
