OGR Smart Team and Menards,

First, I have to say I never have purchased anything from Menards so this is a learning experience. I purchased from Menards.com  - another story for another time.

Second, this may not be the right forum.

I recently purchased the American Power and Light  and the Menards Power and Light - part of the purchase, if I understand the website was an 11% rebate - So I pull down the receipts to submit for the rebate and low and behold the receipt says

Sale Receipt - This is not an original cash register receipt. Not valid for rebate submissions.

Ok, so if I order it from Menards.com, why is this not an original receipt valid for rebates?

Anyone care to inform me how to file for rebates when you buy on line?

Anyone from Menards care to contact me? It is impossible to speak to anyone live unless you live in an area where a store is located.

Extremely frustrated or completely fooled by this.

Unfortunately my receipt, the one I pulled down from my account does not show / match the receipt you shared. Nor have I received an email with this so called rebate receipt. When I go to my account and search receipts, pull a copy, all I get is the message..

Sale Receipt - This is not an original cash register receipt. Not valid for rebate submissions.

With that said, I do have their MCOM Number and my order number - Searching them brings me back to the same position on their site. The good news is I got one of the items, the bad news it this process stinks.

I have searched my emails dating back to 9/16 when I purchased them to see if I have a Menards notification and all I have is a Seldom to Menards and thanks for creating an account.

I sent an email into Menards asking for help. I am hoping that they can get back to me before 10/8, the submission date.

If that doesn't happen ..........well................

Menards - someone from your team - call me - email me and tell me how I get what I need to fill in the rebate forms

MENARDS.COM 5101 MENARD DRIVE EAU CLAIRE, WI 54703

Allowable returns for items on this receipt will be in the form an in store credit voucher if the return is done after 12/15/16

AMERICAN POWER & LIGHT

PROCESSING FEE SHIP FROM STORE 2998505 2@$1.40 $2.80

DELIVERY

Tax $0.00

The process stinks, the rebate should be offered - deducted and check out . They hope you don't apply for it as it saves them money. The reason I am pressing it my rebate is over $23.00. The nearest store is $500 miles away and If I knew this was going be a PIA, I might not have made the purchase. I would return both items but at a 25% restocking fee and shipping back at $30.00 I might was well keep them.

Um, will I purchase from them again?????

John,

Living in NJ, I am 500 miles away from the closest Store. I thought an On-Line purchase would be simple. I am sure other folks have had no issues with Menards or their on-line process.

Yes, I called a store in WI and the person I spoke to was very polite, professional and helped the best she could which included asking the department manager to assist. While she / he tried to assist me - that was a total waste of 30 minutes. When I asked them for an On-Line number to call so I  could work with that Menards department directly (much like Ebay or Amazon) they told me that Menards employees could not call the On-line team and that everyone including them needed to use self service on the web site via email.

Thank you all for your help and direction it is appreciated.

Hi, LOL, sorry.  Looks like we are all in same boat.  I don't know how you did your purchase from Menards so, unfortunately, I can't help you with that.  But, I also, was sucked in by their "11% rebate/Credit Check" thinking it would be mailed to me as a "CHECK" that I could take to my bank and cash.  Along with their extra  "processing fee".  Is that to make up the extra cost of using my credit card?   I bought the 4 pack of the 14 3/4" military flatcar and 2 of the military flatcars with the container and gun.  Like you, I have a sizeable rebate coming my way which I probably will never collect.  I live in PA and closest store is somewhere in Ohio.  Just far enough away to not be worth the drive.  I, also, am saving the rebates in case they ever have a store in my area.  At least they should honor the rebate on the next purchase, even if it is an online purchase.  What's the difference as long as you are giving them your business?

I know it sounds like I am complaining but for what I paid I think it's still a pretty good price.  And, the cars are pretty nice and will make a nice addition to my Army collection.  Soooo, with that said, I am going to go load those flats with some serious armour and run some trains.

PSU1980, the topic of the rebate and the reason for why Menards does it the way they do has been discussed many times in various threads. It is too bad Menards does not have stores nationwide. If you ever get your rebate receipt resolved and once you get it in the mail (be patient, the process may take 4-6 weeks), I will offer to pay you for the rebate so you do not feel cheated or misinformed. Again, there is a reason why Menards offers rebates that can be used in their stores only rather than deducting the price from an already low price product. They do not need to offer a rebate for most to buy their train offerings, but they would like for people to come visit the stores to see what they have to offer. Let me know.

Rick

Rick,

The frustration center upon not putting the proper receipt on line in my account then telling me a email will follow with the correct receipt but submission by 10/8. Second, no one to speak at Menards.com and little to no help when you call a Menards Store. Look at the site today and the offerings against these products.

I simply cannot submit the rebate because the receipt in my on-line account is not what they, Menards, want yet it indicated my purchase, the SKU, the Menards shipping info. Therefore I will miss the submission date and hence the rebate based on their requirements. Plus the receipt says Not valid for rebates. Makes no sense. The purchases qualified

Contact me at kbmkam@aol.com - we can discuss. I do appreciate your willingness to payout the rebate, I will accept but the bigger issue is the process fro on-line purchases.

Thanks,

Kevin

PSU1980, don't worry. We will get your rebate! It seems like this whole thread was happening yesterday. Please understand that we have a very limited staff on Sunday and it may take until Monday for an answer. I guess I shouldn't have taken the day off!

OK, let's start from the beginning. Our goal is to get you your rebate. Here are the steps I will take.

1. Please provide me with your order number. It should start with MCOM if you ordered online.
2. I will ask customer service (customerservice@menardsoc.com) to send you a duplicate receipt. This should solve the issue of the missing rebate receipt.

I will try to better explain a couple of issues you have noted above.

1. Why the processing fee? We ship at cost on all Menards.com orders. We do not inflate shipping costs. The processing fee covers packaging and handling of your order (labor, cost of boxes, bubble wrap, etc.). Again, our shipping costs are very low and we are not trying to fool anyone with our processing fees.

2. What is the correct customer service number? Our stores are not well versed in seasonal items like trains. They can help the best they can, but here are some better contacts for those who are interested. For general questions about your order contact customerservice@menardsoc.com. For specifically train related questions including damaged items contact guest@menard-inc.com.

3. Why do we use email for customer service rather than a phone number? We are a large company (55,000 Team Members). Send an email and we will give you much more accurate information. We are going to make sure your email is handled by the most qualified person. That is not as easy to do on the phone. Again, our customer service department is great, but they are not familiar with trains.

4. Why rebates? Ranger Rick is spot on. We are a home improvement store. Rebates encourage people to come to our stores where the vast majority of our sales occur. For those of you who cannot/choose not to collect rebates, we have taken an initiative to offer online only promotions. As mentioned many times before, we do not have to offer free items because our prices are so low but this is our way of targeting online shoppers so that they can benefit also!

PSU1980,

I'm looking forward to hearing from you with your MCOM order number and we will get your rebate situation sorted out!

Thank you,
Mark the Menards Train Guy

Marc,

This has been going on for a week, I only posted on Saturday to find out what to do, how to do it properly to meet the deadlines.

We all need to take days off, my apologies for ruining your Monday.

Contact me at kbmkam@aol.com and I will provide you with everything you need.

Kevin

Kevin,

Thank you for reaching out to me. I contacted customer service and they send the appropriate information to the email address listed above.

I work with trains all day, so my Monday is in no danger of being ruined.  I am sorry for your troubles and I want to reassure you that we will find a solution.

I visited a new Menards in Branson/Hollistor Mo., A nice store, most all the train items were sold (did I say New store), I asked an employee about the rebate as I live in the Dallas area, he told the rebates were In Store.

What a nice store, the handful of train items were nice and the cost was low as expected.

PSU1908,

I would first start by tracking your rebate as franktrain suggested. This is the shorter web address http://www.rebateinternational.com. Once you track the rebate, you can see if it has been issued or if it is still processing.

Rebate International is a separate entity that processes the rebate checks. Menards Customer Service may not be able to you in regards to rebates. If you follow the link above, there is also a Rebate International Customer Service link on which you can contact them via email.

Let me know what you discover. Thank you for you patience!

I don't work for or being paid by Menards.  I love Menards.  I have purchased all kinds of items both train and non-train for years on end.  99% of the times good.  The other time or two Menards promptly, politely and professionally made it right.

My last train purchase still leaves me reeling--good!!!  I purchased a string of Great Northern hopper cars--the set of 8.  I had them shipped to the store--FREE.  I picked them up and it cost me $16.82 per car!!!

These cars are well made and attractive.  I believe that much of that cost savings is in the packaging.  With MTH and Lionel, you receive these awesome individual boxes full of print describing the item--colorful and well done boxes!!!  HOWEVER, I don't get a darn about a stupid box--that's a HUGE subject for another thread.

At Menards, I received my set of 8 in generic cardboard box and wrapped in generic plastic!  Perfect!  Packing contents to recycle bin and money saved for me!

All I need now is for Menards to do a full-size "O" scale Great Northern Railway big sky blue passenger train (5 to 6 different cars/numbers) so all of these people attempting to sell the old K Line or Lionel like cars for ridiculous prices can enjoy watching their pieces collect dust.

DO YOU HEAR ME MARK!!!  :-)  Let me put you in touch with Great Northern Railway Historical Society aficionados who can give you the correct and accurate information on these cars.

THANK YOU!

I recently got fooled by the 11% rebate also....didn't read the fine print saying that the rebate was for in store purchase only...yes I was happy with the item I purchased...and yes it was a good deal...but I still felt I was duped by the rebate offer....perhaps the could enlarge the print letting you know what the rebate is good of in-store purchase only...or just do away with it altogether....I am sure most of us who do order online from Menards are nowhere near any of their stores...

It seems that this topic and explanation has come up ad nauseam. If the rebate is going to break your deal, don't buy Menard's products. It is like the person who will drive 10 miles down the road to get gas for $.02 per gallon. The Menard's model is to get people to come to their stores which is not and never has been, a train store. They are a home do-it yourself all purpose store competing against Lowes, Home Depot, and a variety of other like stores. Even with your complaint, I doubt they change their model as it must be somewhat successful getting folks exposed to their stores. Since you do not live near a store, you would not go anyway. I think it is a great model...I would do it if I wanted to entice in-store traffic from a possible small focused group like us train guys.

It takes a while to get your rebate back, but I will offer the same thing that I did to some who complained before, send me your rebate and I will send you a check covering the amount.

Rick

Rick,

I did say I did not read the fine print...so I really can't complain.....the "11% Rebate" wording shows up nice an big..."on in store purchases only" in fine print..so if I did have a complaint that wold be it....I will be happy to send you my rebate but there is no need to send me a check...I'm just glad it will go to good use and not go to waste....

Ranger Rick, me friends in Michigan say they have gotten rebate checks and you have to be the person named on the rebate check to use them?   I was going to do a purchase and give them the rebate checks because I'm 250 miles from the nearest Menards.

I agree with the statement "if not getting the rebate breaks the deal for  you, don't buy it".    Just like hearing folks complain about the FREE item that they got. : )   Now if it was a 1000.00 purchase I may get worked up over 11%!!!

Jim

Joe, thank you for your reply. I appreciate your offer of the gift of the rebate. It is truly generous of you. My purpose was really to make folks feel that they were not cheated. I have no Menard's connection other than be a customer. The closest Menard's is a 45 minute drive, so I do shop locally in my small hometown and get to Menard's if other shopping draws me near or if I have a few rebates that will cause me to drive that distance...the rebates I accumulate might (a big might) pay for my gas there and back. I do appreciate what Menard's has brought to the O-Gauge market. I am not a rivet counter and even have some Lionel 1950's and 60's as rolling stock. No where scale. No where real. But, at the same time nostalgic. Menard's cars  are affordable, well-made for the most part, and actually great for beginners and low budget folk. I foolishly started to become a big spender on some items....$50 to $75 for a box car! Yikes!  My Dad would be turning in his grave knowing that I was forking out that kind of money for a toy. I truly began to feel guilty spending that kind of money. Menard's products have brought me back to ground somewhat. I have not looked at a Lionel, MTH, Atlas, or another manufacturer's catalog for some time now. Part is that I realize, I have enough. The other part is I can be much more selective.

I also sort of defend Menard's because of Mark's involvement on the forum. This relationship is unique in this day and age. I know we have other business owners of train stuff that check in and respond here, and I thank them. But how Mark's involvement has come about is something I have never encountered. We know very little about him other than he does a fantastic job responding to our questions, suggestions, and complaints quickly and with courtesy. We are not even sure he is a "train guy" but he always seems to have empathy for us.

Jim, I am not sure about the Michigan guys' problems, but I thought Mark said that the rebates were transferable. I am trying to think if mine even had my name on them. I can't recall they did. Mark will probably chime in to verify. I am an Ohio guy, so maybe it is just the Michigan guys!!!????!!!   :-)

Rick
