We just returned home after attending the last day of the National Convention hosted by METCA. The trading pits, the layouts, the friends, the schwag, the banquet, the auction ....where to begin?

I arrived early Sat morning and had a huge smile on my face as I saw the banner proclaiming TCA National Convention hoisted across the entrance. I parked the car and was greeted in the lobby with a wonderful modular layout. I don't know who put it together for all to enjoy but it was great. I then headed for the trading area. Large hall, lots of vendors and unfortunately prices that imho were quite aggressive. I ran into CSXJoe and Steve Serenska. Joe was scouring for real train items and steve was just plain scouring for deals.

I was thrilled to see old friends from the days when I was a METCA member. I joined METCA right as new leadership was taking over and seeing Scott Kienzlen, Kevin Quinn, Bob Amling, Stu Rankin and some others was terrific. But I digress.

After cruising around I went to the membership meeting followed by the Lionel presentation. The membership meeting was interesting. The three points that stuck in my mind were:

Membership continues to go down at (at least to me) an alarming rate.

One woman was very vocal complaining about time spent on the bus to get to different tours. Others had much different opinions but it was noted to make ride times clearer at future events.

One member raised his concern about the smaller divisions needing to be incorporated into larger divisions to save money for the TCA as a whole. He referenced the $ needed to send a representative from each division to the conventions. (Aside - I have no idea how that topic works).

To address the shrinking membership, tne strategy presented by the Board was for each member to either convince another person to join or to pay for their spouse to be a member.

Lionel put on a nice presentation highlighting LionChief products. There will, based on demand, be a universal remote that will handle the different engines as opposed to a 1:1 ration. There was a cool neon 115th anniversary clock and highlights of the Made in US products.

I left the hall to pick up MJ at Metropark (Amtrak) and we headed back and went to the reception and banquet. I snoozed and forgot to verify my table seating ...more on that later.

As always at these events, we made new friends, shared stories, and as Stu stated at the beginning of the banquet (per Lou Redman) we gather because of these little toy trains that bring us so much joy.

The auctions after dinner were lively highlighted by a Custom Bi-Polar on a GG1 Chassis. Several other cool items that I have to dig out my notes to share.

Each table at the banquet was piled high with train goodies. Metca made sure no one went home empty handed and some, well remember how I screwed up my table? We ended up sitting at a table with only five of us so this was our

MJ won a great Dept 56 Church, a patch, a Lionel miniature station perpetual calendar and an American Flyer Crane and Tender. I was lucky and won two mint cars.

Once again I would like to congratulate Stu Rankin and the entire METCA Team for pulling of a great convention that was only a pipe dream a few short years ago. Bravo gentlemen, Bravo.

Yes, it was a great convention.  Went on two tours earlier in the week. Went to the trading hall and banquet on Saturday.

Lots of great table prizes at the banquet. 4 different banquet cars per table. My wife wound up winning one of them.  Lots of great merchandise at the METCA store including a Madison Hardware TOFC, 4 different Madison Hardware boxcars and in addition the Coney Island and Bergen County Traction Co trolleys.

Many thanks to Stuart and all the other METCA members involved in the convention.

This is a "me too" reply, but one that I feel is necessary: Kudos to Stu Rankin, Kevin Quinn, Bob Amling, Scott Kienzlen, Rich Levow, and others I'm forgetting for working so hard to pull it all together. Great job, guys.

I enjoyed the layout tours immensely and I also enjoyed catching up with old friends.

I can't say it enough: GREAT JOB, METCA GUYS.

My family just returned home from the convention as well.  It was our first, and we had a terrific time.  Met a bunch of folks and visited with some old pals as well.  Hats off to Stu and his team for their hard work!

In addition to the fine tours and activities, a couple of highlights for me were:

All of the tours we took were very nice, but I would have to especially thank Ron Zweig for opening his home to share his beautiful layout with us and the NJ HiRailers for sharing their extraordinary layout and their hospitality!  I have seen photos of the NJ HiRailers layout here on the OGR forum, but it was nothing compared to seeing it in person.  All I can say is wow!  We got back to the hotel pretty late Friday night, but it was worth it to see those layouts.

At the trading hall, I got to meet Alan Graziano.  I have admired his terrific modeling on the forum for several years, and it was great to talk with him and check out some of his phenomenal work as well.  Rob Pisani from Atlas was also there and happy to discuss the status of the new Maxi-IV well cars.  Sounds like things are moving along nicely on those, and hopefully we'll hear more progress at York.  Rob also gave a very nice presentation on Atlas' manufacturing in China.

And, as others had mentioned we all left with lots of cars and gifts from the banquet.

Great job again to the METCA convention team!

Just returned from the convention today.Met a lot of people I have had e-mail contact with for many years.Everyone from METCA was working hard to make this convention one of a kind and they did it. All of the tours I went on we're first class and extremely well thought out.Could of should of spent more time at the trading pits but I did mail some trains home to me. Should arrive this week.

great job guys and gals of METCA

Paul, so sorry I missed you. Sounds like you and MJ had a great time. Please give her our best.

Ben understates the reactions of the guests to the HiRailers. I spent Tuesday at the club and the visitors were floored by the layout. It was great having them there.

I spent 2 days as a volunteer for METCA at the hotel and the people couldn't have been nicer. The reactions I got were pretty much the same as yours. However, I do have to tell you, that METCA cannot influence NY area traffic. It's going to stop when it feels like it, and that's it. Also, we have an awfully big metro area, and the tours were spread out over a lot of the area. So its going to take time and be a lot longer to get from place to place than some people are accustomed to.

Nuff said. Have a great 4th.

I was able to get both Trolly's - Giving them to my dad. He was born in Hoboken, then my grandparents moved to Manhattan - where the visited Coney Island all the time. My parents move to Northern NJ where we spent quite a bit of time at PP. He will enjoy these. I hope at 88 they give him the joy I got every time my grandfathers and Dad took me and my brother to Madison Hardware.

Stu and the team did an outstanding job and I was very happy to meet the many members  of the TCA.

Thanks all for the kind words.  Many people stopped Ellen and I at the convention to tell us what a good time they were having.  This was truly a labor of love.  I spent literally thousands of hours organizing the trips and tours to offer them at a reasonable price.  NYC has one of the highest costs of living in the country.
