Welcome once again, to the show that never ends.  Trains come and go, but the railroad rolls on.  Midweek Photos is a glimpse of the real world in what we have captured the last handful of days (or years, at times.)

I went to a wedding in Massachusetts last week, and went to Northampton, MA for a walk around and a bit of lunch.  While I have been here before, it was at night, so some things were lost on me.  This nifty bridge over the Main Street hosts a hiking/biking trail.  It is very well used.  It sports the metal artwork featuring a streamlined train and passengers waiting to board. This was once the New Haven route between New Haven, CT and Shelburne Junction.

Right next to the trail is the active route of the former Boston & Maine.  Amtrak now uses this portion of the route for the Vermonter.  You can still see "Boston & Maine" on the bridge.

On the way to the old Union Station is this neat streetcar diner.

The street level entrance to the train station, when it was the Union Station.  Now, it is a collection of restaurants and bars, some of which are now closed.

With all of the exterior additions, it is hard to get a feel for how the station once looked.  The south end is active.  I was there around 1:30 on a Friday, and it seemed rather busy for a late lunch time.

To the right of the photo above is the Amtrak "station." No baggage check, no ticket agent.  This is a no frills train. One Vermonter in each direction.

Here comes the train...

Five Amfleet coaches on the way to Springfield, Hartford and points west.

Well, that's my contribution for this week.  Please add your own photos to the thread for now.  Have a great Labor Day weekend.  See you next time around.

The park system of Monmouth County, New Jersey has transformed segments of the former rights of way of the Jersey Central's Seashore and Freehold Branches into beautiful trails. I've recently been exploring the old lines, having been treated by my Dad to a ride aboard the CNJ RDCs during the final year of passenger service between Matawan and Atlantic Highlands in 1966. Presented here are images of railroading reminders still in place between Keyport and Belford. The building in the last picture is a replica of the old Port Monmouth station.

The last freight train operated over the Seashore Branch in 1983 after which it was abandoned by Conrail but, as I walk along, if I close my eyes and listen carefully, I can still hear the echoes of Camelbacks, RS-3s and RDCs!
