Picked this up yesterday at our TTOS SP meet. Who made it? Looks like a Carlisle & Finch style. Need to know before I decide what to do with it.

Wow, that looks old. Here's something related on Ebay, described as Carlisle and Finch ca. 1911 - 1915.
And another one: http://www.tcawestern.org/cf.htm
That IS a Carlisle & Finch piece, incredibly old. Last ones were made in 1911, were gauge 2. One of the company's more famous pieces. Had a 3 pole motor, ran on strip track.
according to the Greenberg volume (Claytor), the #3 mining locomotive was made in a few different versions from 1897 - 1915. the shell you have matches one of two versions (the frame/ bumpers changed, not the shell) produced between 1905 and 1909/10. it came in yellow, red, green and orange so the good news is that you still have a few more you can look for ...
unfortunately there is no photo of what's under the hood.
nice find!
cheers...gary

I debated whether to quickly delete this post. I had already found my answer in a book about a foot from my face at the keyboard. When I bought it and 2 ore cars, I thought it was too nice to be over 100 years old, hence my posting. Also the ore cars I thought were a bit home made looking, but now looking at them, probably real nice technology for the age. The ore cars have a wood base and a cast non dumping bin. The cross piece on the bottom of the bin has 145 cast into it. So, are these original Carlisle & Finch ore cars and how did the couple.? Needless to say, I should not take out my Dremmel and stuff a motor in these

Steve, interesting link here about rebuilding a C&F trolley motor. The wood chassis looks very similar. The motor looks like a put-together Dorfan.

Yeah, you should shoot Joe Mania an email, he'd be able to tell you right off if it is a repro.
I did put "Samplingman" on the photo file name but should have credited you directly. Your armored train pic came up in a Google search and seemed the best example to illustrate the point !

No worries, I thought it a fun surprise to see my toys being re-posted.
The wood frames certainly make sense because C&F were 2-rail - easy insulation! I understand the locomotives had axle or wheel insulation of wood too, maybe an axle spigot piece or similar - I dunno, so I searched. A different model showed up on that auction site with a view from underneath. Looks like a fibre spigot piece maybe?
