I would appreciate some advice. I apologise if this is a dumb question, but I’m a beginner. I’ve been happily running the prewar and immediate postwar Lionel sets passed on to me by my father. I have more than one transformer including a RW250.

I’ve been admiring ads for Santa Fe F3 diesels from around 1993. Will the powered diesel A unit run with my postwar AC transformer or does it require a modern type of transformer? If yes, what type would you recommend?

Also, the B units are advertised as having have Diesel RailSounds II digital sound system. Do these require a modern transformer?

Just to add to the above advice, its likely your 1993 era diesels had AC "Pullmor" motors in them, so your transformer should operate them without issue. The "B" unit with Railsounds II should have an included Lionel Railsounds "button box" to operate the horn/bell functions.

Agree with adding a fast-blow fuse or circuit breaker between the transformer and track connection.
