Hello,

Does anyone in O scale make this modern style locomotive air conditioner (pic below)? I want to paint a few brass and plastic GP30's in the BNSF H3 scheme on what they call GP39's. BLMA makes them in HO and N scales, but I don't see anything for the larger scales. Thanks.

Travis,

I have an MTH GP38 in BNSF Heritage III paint that has somewhat similar (but not exactly the same) air conditioner units on the roof. I can't tell though if they are add-on details or are cast into the roof itself and painted. I don't think the MTH engine had these details when first issued, which might suggest it's an add-on detail. But there's a little paint bleed over to the roof which suggests it's cast-in an painted. I suppose MTH could have modified the tooling that way.

Even if they are separate parts, they might not be quite what you want and whether you can get them from MTH is anyone's guess. If interested I'll grab a photo of what they look like and email it.

Rich,

I had the exact MTH H3 loco you're referring to with the air conditioners on top. I recently sold it and forgot to get the dimensions of the air conditioners. I can't remember exactly if they were separate pieces are cast in either. If it's not too much trouble, can you get me some measurements on those. I'll probably just fabricate some out of styrene similar in length of the MTH design, but probably a little taller.

Thanks,

Big train,

Right now I'll see if I can scratch up some reasonable stand ins, and if I can't acheive the look I'm after, I will contact you to go that route. Thanks for the offer!

Gregg- Thanks for your response. I will take a look at Lionel to see what's available.

CBS072-Thanks for your response. I like your Topeka cab loco, looks good!

Sure. I'll take some measurements and send them to you along with some photos.

I've decided to bight the bullet and do a pattern for one of the A/C units so I can cast them in resin for anybody who wants some. It will be similar to the one shown on the BNSF loco at the intro of this article. It's small - only about 24" x 36" x 8". The casting will be smooth in contrast to a 3D rendition that would be grainy. I should be able to have photos by Tuesday.

Stay tuned!

Tom
