Modifying a Lionel 6-27079 "traditional" size NYC boxcar

This model is Lionel 6-27079 NYC which is a very basic plastic body boxcar with a plastic underframe and sprung metal trucks. The car has been improved by replacing the underframe with a custom made frame that includes more scale size brake gear.

The original plastic underframe is shown. This part has some molded in details and various slots and holes. The molded "brake detail" is greatly undersized and hidden under the truck on one end.

The model as shown now has a new underframe and new wood floor. The added weight improves rolling characteristics since the car now has a lower center of gravity.
