Prior to the first Christmas run, I like to unpack, lubricate, and test run new engines and rolling stock. This ensures no tears and disappointment on the big day. Anyway, I know there are a lot of Big Boy fans out there that will be doing very detailed reviews. So, I thought I would review my latest edition to the family stable of engines...
James, the number five red engine.
Oh yes, I pulled the trigger on this little beauty. My first impressions out of the box were very good overall. As a conisour of all things Sodor, I have reviewed literally thousands of hours of videos and read hundreds of books on the subject of the mighty Sodor Railroad. I would have to say I, like most supervisors of young engineers, have tremendous knowledge and respect for the power of these engines.
The set comes complete with engine, tender, coal truck, and bobber caboose. Now as most of us Sodor rivet counters know, Sodor Railway rarely utilized a caboose on their system. As a matter of fact, the engines would often just run the rails without any load at all. Historically, this was not accurate to the prototype, and I really have to question Lionel's decision to add so many cars. However, I do think the rolling stock adds to the set.
Another non-prototypical feature is the eye movement. I do believe, James had a two chuff per revolution eye movement. This is not a deal breaker for me, but his slightly orange tint might be. If you know of any good engine painters out there, please let me know. I want my number five to be as true to the prototype as possible. The whistle and bell are perfect, but the crew talk is a little off. I have never heard Sir Topemhat say all aboard, but a we all know we don't have to push the crew talk button.
Overall, a great set that my little engineer will love! Merry Christmas.
