I have them both and the detail is not that much more spectacular except for the cab and the moving fans in the radiators. Id say go for the MTH since the lionel one is still fetching ASTRONOMICAL prices. I disagree that the Lionel is well worth the "extra" money. First there is no such thing as "extra money" I know I have never had any extra. and they are going for more than 3 times what the MTH version goes for

I don't see any of that stuff when it goes by me on the layout 3 to 30 feet away. I run the things a lot and Ive never even noticed the spinning radiator fans but i know they're there. Ive got a butt-load of really sweet trains and what Ive noticed is that all that super fine detail only really matters the first time you take it out the box, after that you never really notice it. And its not $750 now is it, didn't i just see you selling one for $1600? the price difference when sold as new id say yeah its worth spending the money but the after market insane inflation puts it well out of worth doing range. When I compare a Camaro to a BMW I always wonder why it cost so much to get those **** things fixed all the time, BMW's are a pain in the ***. Ive got 3 Lionel Gevos that all need stupid parts and service nonsense to the tune of a couple hundred bucks total and Ive got 3 MTH Gevos that need nothing

Pray tell, would you please empirically enumerate what the detail difference(s) is/are.

I recall when the MTH version was finally released and the discussions here.  Each had its pluses and minuses.

There's 2 visionline Evos es44ac they have duel motors and detailed interiors.. Then there was 2 vision line gensets switchers that had detailed interiors and had one motor .. I think this is where you got it confused .. The ge evo is the 6-28306  retailed for 850 had duel Motors and 4 pounds of pulling power .Is 16 pounds all metal construction had rotating fans charging light semi fixed pilots removable roof with detailed interior and in my opinion the best diesel engine lionel has made. The down side to this is the price cause there overpriced and they had plenty of problems with them . 1st problem was the rails you can't handle a 16 pound engine by the rails you need to avoid that at all cost. Next is the rotating fans the connectors that they used where not the best and sometimes dont make contact and the rear lights or the fans stopped working .. Then the gears that are on the rotating fans need oiled or they seized up. Next problem is usually cause from not being ran the trucks would lock up from the grease lionel used and the engine won't run right..Next  the ge evo was screwed to a board and the bolts where different sizes and people put the long bolt in the back and put the screw threw the smoke  Pcb.. The long bolt goes in the front of the engine..With all these issiues I put my money on never seeing a diecast es44 again..

Off the top of my head....

1. MTH's is missing two grabs on the front of the nose.

2. The prototype hand rails behind the cab has two horizontal rails. MTH doesn't have them, Lionel's are correct.

3. MTH's have some grabs/ladders on the side panels of the body. The protoype doesn't. Lionel's is correct.

4. MTH's doesn't have the rear view mirrors.

5. MTH's smoke exhaust is blue, Lionel's silver. Prototype is silver.

That is quite a list of drastic detail differences making the Lionel engine cost three or so times the price.

Of course you forgot one detail. the Lionel came with pre-rusted wheels.

As I recall the discussions here when the MTH version was released a member posted pictures of his Lionel and MTH.  From the pictures it appeared that the several embossed panels along the body were much better defined on the MTH like the prototype.  At the time he the owner/photographer affirmed that to be true.

Just saying, and also saying MTH should have caught some of these small details especially after getting the panels right(er).

I have both these engine this mth vs lionel isn't a debate .. The only thing these 2 engine share is the blinking lights and the color. The lionel looks more like the real thing it has way more detail not just the cab the side doors open to show the insides of the engine .. The semi fixed pilots twice the pulling power.. Better sound .. Is it overpriced now ?(1400 to 2k) hell yea .. At the 850'retail price it probely wasn't .. Now what's great about the mth one it looked good ,and was cheap and you got a free car with it..

Folks,

This is great information and I appreciate everyone's insight. Could not ask for a better bunch of people to help me decide - Bottom line - need to find one that is reasonably priced. No 2nd mortgages or buying small used cars. I had one person point me to EBay where the listed price was $3,100.00 for the engine and 3 car set. Another price - $2,400 used, unit damaged and TCA graded box - like 2 or 3.

Pricey yes!. I bet someone will purchase it. I don't mind paying a premium but buying it at 3 or 4 times the SRP.....makes me think

Keep the information coming my way as it is important to gather perspectives from this very informed group of train lovers.

I almost would sell you mine but I can't find the engine I want to replace it with .

Well, I have seen it all in terms of prices on the Lionel version. Ebay, someone had the engine and 3 cars - new - asking price $3,100.00. Same guy, a used one with damage and no box $2,500. Then the CP version $1,800.00. I want an engine not to put a down payment on a car. Seems like if they wanted to sell these units they would be better priced. Not a shock that their were 0 bids.

MTH - have yet to locate one. Will continue to look -

WAIT AND BUY A LIONEL ONE FOR $1800.00 ITS WORTH IT WHY SPEND 2,000 ON A LIONEL BIGBOY WHEN YOU CAN BUY A MTH PROTO 1 BIGBOY FOR $600.00 WHEN YOU SEE THE 2 ENGINES SIDE BY SIDE YOU'LL SEE WHY THE LIONEL EVO ENGINES ARE WORTH SO MUCH IT'S THE BEST DIESEL ENGINE EVER MADE BY ANY MANUFACTURER  http://www.ebay.com/itm/LIONEL...;hash=item3f41b48ec2
