Picked up a REV L TIU at York.  Just installed it and while I have not done much testing; with all engineered filters removed from the layout the two engines I've tried so far I'm getting 10's around the layout.  With bus wiring on the layout I'm hoping the REV L TIU will eliminate the check track messages.

 

Anyway while checking out the TIU Manual I noticed it was printed in 2010 and still had the magic light bulb trick for improving signal strength in its pages.  Now with a REV L the need for this is eliminated.  Question is if a newbe pickes up a new DCS system wouldn't this manual be steering them in the wrong direction?  Also there's no mention of the new USB port.  MTH update your manuals.

    I do understand your thinking, RJR and I had a little banter about this exact subject a while back, my belief is that upon request, Barry's DCS O Gauge Companion needs to included with every sale of the MTH DCS.  Others think the directions are just fine.  Your point is well taken, IMO the MTH directions for complete operation of the DCS are no where near adequate, for complete understanding of the DCS, especially when just starting out.

I did the original testing on the REV  L.  My layout was where I first discovered the light bulb trick.  I took all bulbs off and the REV L works perfect with no bulbs.  You will not need bulbs or filters.  With a bulb you were always able to check to see if things were working.  Not so with the filter.  Buss wiring with the REV L will work perfect.  Remember to not put your drops close together.  You know electronics and know how to test for that.  

Gary, I agree with you that the manual that accompanies a product should match and describe the product's features.  Unlike Dave, I have always found the MTH documentation, while sparse, to be adequate to get a layout up and running.  But Quite frankly, I haven't consulted it since 2002.  Also, having run trains for 75 years, I have much experience that covers gaps, experience a newbie wouldn't have.

 

No Dave, I still don't want to pay for another copy of Barry's book if I buy a TIU.

Just completed more exstensive testing of my TIU with a PS3 diesel and even with dirty track I can't get anything less than a 10 with or without lighted passenger cars.  Where with my Rev G TIU it was rare to get 10 and more likely 5 to 7.  Next I'll get one of my PS2 steamers out and do the same test.  But it's looking good.
