I picked up a set of modestly priced MTH European Tank cars today at York. They have the scale wheels and the link couplers. Will these operate acceptably on gargraves track? is there a way to swap out one coupler to standard US hirail couplers? Does MTH offer the hirail wheel sets for sale to swap them out?

MTH provides plastic dummy couplers on the U.S. market hi-rail versions of their Euro rolling stock. They have an online parts diagram for the tank cars. Swapping out the couplers shouldn't be a big problem if MTH has the parts in stock.
MTH sells hi-rail wheelsets. If they are out of stock, try offering your scale wheelsets for trade on the Buy/Sell board. There are always 2-railers looking for scale wheelsets to convert 3-rail cars.
