Hey guys- I purchased the above caboose and I am wondering is there a way trigger the signal man with the cab 2 legacy remote?

The directions say the transformer whistle/bell will trigger off a MTH transformer or a track magnet... I have neither.

Is there another way to trigger?

J Daddy,

I wonder if one of those old Lionel sound buttons would work? They were offered when Lionel first came out with Rail Sounds to work the bell if your transformer did not have a bell button. I used to have one but have no idea where it is or if I still have it.

I have the same MTH cabin car, love it. The crowds at our open houses love to see the guy wave the lantern. The only pain is getting back to the transformer to make it work. You do have to hold the bell button down for a few seconds. Maybe TMCC is the way to go.

If you were using a Powermaster or ZWC or ZWL couldn't you access the track and do it that way?

I am using the ZW-C on my layout and the answer is yes, you can use address the track and activate the caboose using the bell button.  I have four of these MTH cabooses (in different road names) and they are good looking cabooses and the man coming out with the lantern is a real scene stealer.

I am no expert on DCS but can't you also access the track and activate the bell for conventional operation on it?

Happy railroading,

Don

You can do that with the Z4000 Remote Control Receivers, not sure if via TIU.

By the way, put more pictures of your beautiful layout on the forum.....WOW.

Thanks Larry for the offer on the instructions. I have a copy. Read them over. I know I can utilize functions if I address the TR button via the CAB 2 on MTH engines, however, I am not having any luck with this caboose. I will try again tonight.

Thanks for the compliments. I am having fun running this MTH unit around the layout...

J Daddy, did you also try to  use the horn button?  It seems that some of my cabooses will operated with the bell button while another one may require the horn button.  I have a friend with the ZW-L and his will operate the caboose but do not remember is we used the bell or horn button.

Good luck,

Don

but I was hoping to be able to trigger the little guy with the remote

I told you how to do that immediately after your first post.  Install a Signalman Boxcar board in the caboose and you can trigger it with the Cab-1 or Cab-2 remote.  If you don't do that, it is a conventional piece of equipment and is triggered by a conventional bell button or a conventional operating track section.

Thanks Bob for reiterating your suggestion. However I wanted to trigger the caboose without purchasing  additional boards and remotes. The hobby is as expensive enough as it is.
Selecting TR and hitting bell/horn button is as free and simple as it gets.

Good to know.  Hopefully the same technique stops the perpetual motion signal man in my Pennsy boxcar.  Neat feature..only it does get real old after 10 cycles.

Thanks.

I was wondering if anyone knows how to activate MTH operating cars via DCS (if there is a way), as I do not have any Lionel control components. Do the MTH signalman cabooses, dump cars, and operating reefers only activate by the accessory rails in between the tracks? I am using Atlas O 3-rail, so I am assuming I would just need to install more accessory rails at the location of where I want these items activated. I am solely operating in DCS Fixed Output mode.

I am considering using scrap track and removing the black center rail to create my own longer accessory rails, so I can expand the location of where I want the cars to activate. Has anyone done this and is it successful? I am building a new layout and now is the time to figure this out

Thanks in advance ,

Eric

From the MTH instruction manual P. 2;

There are two ways to operate this caboose.

1) Auto allows you to operate the signalman with the bell button on any AC Transformer equipped with a bell button or DCS Remote.*

2) Operating Track System (OTS) allows you to activate the signalman using the unloading feature on your operating track sections.

AUTO OPERATION

1) Move the switch on the bottom of the car to the Auto position and place the caboose on track.

2) Hold down the bell button on your transformer or your DCS* remote for 1-2 seconds

3) The caboose will automatically cycle. The signalman will swing out with a lantern, and then will go back to the rear of the caboose, ending the cycle.

4) Press the bell button again to begin another cycle.

JDaddy,

Thanks for this thread as I have the same PRR caboose but never realized that it could be activated by means other than an Operating track section.

Using my Legacy remote it appears to take a 2 sec. press of the bell button (addressing the track) to start the action but an additional hold of 2 more sec. to lock the sequence into forward.

I wish MTH would have built the same actuation feature into the operating boxcar.
