My MTH Premier H-10 2-8-0 with the 5 volt boards does everything properly but speed control.  As soon as I roll the DCS thumbwheel up one notch the engine takes off at about 35-40 SMPH.  Same for reverse.  I have removed the boiler and checked the distance of the tach reader and tach tape and both look okay.  The tape is clean and the reader is mounted securely.  All sounds work ok as does start up and shutdown in conventional or DCS.  Speed control is the only issue.  Also, this is one of those engines that the marker lights will flicker when the smoke is on. Any help on how to check the proper operation of the tach reader? or some other issue? Thanks.

Well I get good continuity from the tach reader to the 10 pin plug in the engine for the orange and gray wires.  The blue wire goes to another 8 pin board in the front of the engine that seems to get  track power(red) and wires for all the lights in the engine. What does the blue wire do?  Is there an ohm reading to look for between the orange, grey and blue on the reader itself?

Still trying to get to the orange wire in the tender, had to cut off a zip tie. Yes this engine has a MUX board.
