What does it sound like?  Is it the sound used to arm the Protocoupler?  If so, I have my 1st one to die.  I was setting it up for my Christmas train and turned it on to hear this, and it had already been going around the tree for 10+ minutes.  I was not happy.

If you have the old white battery, throw it away and get a new one.  This time of year we get to see (hear) lots of 3 clank situations as engines come out for Christmas.    From time to time someone will say the white battery looks good and refuse to spend a few extra bucks.  I walk away from those jobs.  If you trust someone to un scramble your board, you should trust his judgement and go with the new battery.  As a rule, most are happy to get the job done.

Never say never.   Everyone needs to go with what works for them.  Like Steve pointed out, read the instructions if you use a BCR.    I had a guy bring me a PS-3 diesel with a complaint that it takes a long time to warm up.  I asked if he read the directions and he told me he has had trains from 1949 to present and does not need to read any book.  The PS-3 engine was fine.  The problem was the owner not the train.
