Anybody ever do this.  There where several locomotives produced with the "puffer" smoke system, a mechanical linkage to the drive gears moving a piston to generate a puff roughly in time with the chug.

Twice on on my, after sitting for a while unused the o-ring on the piston becomes stiff with age and causes a bind in the drive.

I believe that the options are to consider the replacement of the o-ring part of regular maintenance, or to retrofit a MTH unit.

If I retrofit the MTH unit, I'll install a Cruise Control module and a chuffer board.

Thoughts?

Have the smoke unit and fan from a dead dockside, the engine already has TMCC and Rails Sounds.  Overall in my opinion, its better looking than the MTH version.  I only need the CCM, so the cost is relatively low.  The engines slow speed performance is significantly better with the piston removed.

Appreciate the advice Marty.  I fully understand the concept of being upside down on something.

The piston in any of these affects the low speed running.  For the one posted below, it was originally going to just get cruise and sound, but the low speed performance was so poor with the smoke unit that the owner opted to do the full upgrade.  Needless to say, in spite of the cost, he liked the result.

Ignore the fact that the video is sideways, I couldn't get it to flip when I uploaded it.  This is one of the K-Line semi-scale upgrades, this one got the works, cruise commander, MTH smoke, Super-Chuffer, and lighting upgrades.  It's coming on the outside track after the Y3 trips the breaker and dies on the inside track.
