The Penn did a rework of their Eries sometime around 1959-'60.  These units, and I don't know if it included all 48 copies, received modified MU capabilities...including nose recepticles. I believe this allowed them to MU with EMD models, and perhaps other makes too.  Questionable investment as most Eries were gone to trades by the end of '64.

The Kansas City Southern had a few of the Erie Built cab units. I believe I did see images of them MUed with EMD's. Not sure if it was early in the lifetime or just later when they were reengined with EMD motors.

Of course you mean EMD prime movers, as the "motors" are mounted down on the axles in the trucks.

 

After re-engined by EMD, including EMD electrical systems, they would have been MU-able with other EMD units..

Jack:  I know that the Milwaukee often ran their Erie Builts MU'd with E-7's as well as FP-7's.  This happened fairly early, like in the early 1950's, but I don't know what modifications they made to be able to do that.  I'm sure that I've seen photos of EMD's MU'd with Alco passenger units as well.  Must have had some way to do it.
