Congrats Marty!   Hope I get back up toyour area so I can visit your layout in person.

Marty is a class act. He helped me find anengine a few months ago by giving me some great advice and guidance.  He took the time to help me, and he has not even met me.  Marty is a great asset to the hobby for all that he haand one, and continues to do?

Congratulations Marty [and Dottie of course]. I can appreciate the long hours and hard work that evolved as a labor of love. And, I envy your 33 years of achieving your goals. Because over that same period of time I became the master of dismantling layouts due to repeated company transfers during the '70s and'80s---but two most recently in '08 and'09 due to age-related health issues.

No question, your story is a great example, in particular for the newbies and semi-elders.

It must be interesting to ponder what your 3 rail layout vision was back then...long before command control, scale fidelity and that little thing called the www was common place.  Most anything 33 years old is obsolete and useless these days.  And yet an engine made 100 years ago is perfectly at home on that layout today.  Deeep thoughts!

Bruce, no old rusty relics on this layout.  No old post war and not one mechanical E unit on the property.  As time marched on, I always kept up with buying what was current.  My early goal was to build something that would reflect my memories of the Pennsylvania Railroad.  I spent every summer in Pennsylvania living with my aunt and uncle.  I grew up with the GG-1, Box cabs, and late PRR steam.  I wanted long main lines that would carry long PRR passenger trains.  I wanted live catenary.  I achieved my goal.  I built the layout with proper materials and used heavy wiring.  All my panels used quality switches.   All my trains are scale.  Most of the engines are MTH.  I do have about 60 Lionel Legacy locomotives.  They are good quality.

I was fortunate to be the first to get a glimpse of TMCC and I was running DCS before anyone saw it.  We ran DCS in the early days with a laptop computer.   It has been a great run.  As long as I am above ground, the layout will be available to all my fellow OGR Forum members.

Thank you everyone for all the kind words.

Sorry for being late to this party but indeed Happy Birthday.

I can't add anything new to the story of how Marty and Dottie graciously welcome you into their home and share their love of the hobby. Nor can I add to waht has been said about Martys over-the-top approach to helping others. What I can say is if you get the chance - take them up on their kind offer and see this layout.

The blend of traditional track and hi-rail action is extraordinary.

How about current photos?

This Spring, I was talking to someone, comparing photos of our layouts. We each had layouts in roughly the same size room and each about at the same place in the process (benchwork/fascia/track all in place, scenery not started yet). His was 2-rail O and mine is On30. I'll never forget the conversation past that:

Me: Looking good, when did you start on that?

Him: About 40 years ago.

Me: Nice!

Him: So, how long have you been working on yours?

Me: Uh... well, for about 8 months.

Him: WHAAAAAT?
