I do like how you have integrated the FasTrack into the layout, it looks top notch. How much of your layout is FastTrack vs other track

 

All I can say is outstanding! But Me being 71 I'm not sure that I would be able to get to first base with all this technology! I run all TMCC on the layout now and for me that is how far I am planning to go I don't think I could handle using my phone to run my trains, I see a lot of crashes if I did.

Boy, Nick, that was a very comprehensive video of LCS and iCAB - probably the best one I've seen to date. It is particularly helpful since I am planning to put the LCS components in place right now on my layout.  I noticed that you had your iPad in some kind of a holder or stand - could you elaborate on what you used for that? It looked very sturdy.

Also, I love the Legacy cattle car at the end.  I got that car when it first came out and it is probably the one car above all others that visitors (especially kids) love to play with.

To answer a couple questions/comments:

Chris- my layout spans two different rooms, and the main room (Pittsburgh Industrial Railroad) is all fastrack, along with my yard.  The horseshoe curve room is all Ross custom switches, and gargraves were used for the straight pieces. I've attached a track plan so you can see all the areas I'm referring to. Would I consider changing my main room to this same track system eventually? Possibly!

Marty- I feel like I choose good spots for those sensor tracks.  It's cool just letting trains run whole I work on something and they do their own thing!

Kieth- thanks for being a loyal fan,  it's always nice hearing from fellow "burgers"!

Jim- I'm glad this video was of good help to you.  You'll defiantly enjoy the LCS system. The iPad holder is called "loop for iPad" it's made by griffin. I bought it a few years back, and yes it's very sturdy. I also couldn't agree more with the cattle car.  It's really a cool frieght car to own with the cow sounds. My almost 7 yr old daughter is the reason I got it in the first place. She loves it!  I wish Lionel would make some newer cars like this. Possibly more barn yard animals like a chicken car with some rooster sounds woul be especially welcomed, since I'm also an owner of chickens lol!

Paul/Matt- thank you, I bleed PRR, CR & more modernly NS too! Lol!  Although I more recently have diverted a little to some westerly choices for some variety.

Regarding your track - If starting from scratch, would you use FT or the Ross/Gargraves combo for the layout?

 

Your weathering of FT looks really good, it blends very well and doesn't look "sectional" at all.

Mike- Sorry I didn't respond quicker.  I personally would choose to use the Ross/gargraves combo. The reason being it's it's a little more versatile with shaping unique curves, many more switch options, and the realism aspect. Another thing I like is that Ross uses the Dz2500 switch machines which work great wihen controlled with the Lionel legacy system. With that said its a little more work to install, cut, wire and ballast.

The fastrack is a great track system though, and I would recommend it to anyone. It's easy to setup and "ready to go" almost immediately. Now with the addition of the sensor track it makes some sense, but I've read about people dismantling the sensor track for use with other track systems.

As for weathering and giving the fastrack some more realism, I first started by adding a realistic looking ballast. Then I sprayed it down with a glue mixture to harden the ballast. The last step, after everything is dry, was just simply brushing a watered down black acrylic paint over the fastrack.  I did it heavier between the rails to look like heavy traffic of a mainline.

Can you tell me if the iCab app will run on an iPad. I have the LCS app and would like to buy the iCab app but I really don't want to buy an iPod touch just to run iCab and I don't want to spend 50 bucks only to find out the app doesn't work with my iPad.
