"Have they modified those ridiculous windows?"

I don't think so Art. These models will no doubt be the same window treatment as has been the case for many years. Did you see Charlie Nassau's post about new tooling for Lionel passenger cars? I think that is where you will see a change. I had an interesting conversation with Lionel as to what is being introduced. You need to check out the new catalog next week.

Ya just gotta wonder if folks even remember whether they pre-ordered this set or not -- it's been THAT long ago.      Technically speaking, the set pre-dated Lionel's BTO program by about 3 years, so I'm not sure what qualifies as an "extra".  But Charlie Ro's website still has the Pocahontas set listed for pre-order -- with an ETA of 2/10/2015.  Sounds about right for a Lionel shipment leaving NC next week.

H-A-L-L-E-L-U-J-A-H !!!  It's been one heck of a wait for 611J enthusiasts -- even if it won't have whistle-steam.

P.S.  How cool would it be if Lionel delivered Pocahontas "add-on cars" along with the set?  Isn't the new catalog due out on 2/2?  Lionel could have catalog'd them in the new catalog and surprised folks with immediate delivery.    MORE than enough time has elapsed for them to have pulled off that gem of a coup.  Just sayin'... Now THAT's how you help folks forget about this huge delay that's certainly been one for the record books.

I just pre ordered my set from Charles Ro and they said its a guaranty I will get it. Pretty excited I was about to jump ship and go with MTH just to get passenger car/locomotive set.

Now if they would come out with an add on set!

From all current indications, this set has not been canceled.  In fact, there was a post here toward the end of last year where somebody inquired to Lionel about this set, and Mike R from Lionel indicated the set would ship in January unless Lionel's inventory process pushed into an early February delivery... which appears to be what happened, given the original post from Nassau Hobbies.

Quite likely if you ordered it from Nicholas Smith Trains, they will get whatever number of sets they originally ordered.  Just that it's been so long ago, lots of folks gave up hope this set would ever see the light of day and erroneously concluded the set was cancelled.  But the 611J's have reportedly been sitting in Lionel's NC warehouse for 18 months or so awaiting arrival of the  aluminum passenger cars.

Interesting saga for sure... but it appears there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel... and it will be a 611J pulling a string of N&W passenger cars!

I wonder how the new MTH J will compare with Lionel's?

We have the older TMCC RS 5.0 edition that Alex M added the 4 chuffs and doctored the smoke on - It  even smokes from the steam chest. Is a terrific model with the pre-Legacy multi-toned whistle. Can't imagine what else (other than whistle steam) they can add to these beauties!

The MTH engine model will probably be the same as the last run of 611 in their 2008 Volume 2 catalog.  If that is the case, the MTH model will be less detailed than Lionel’s.  The question will be the sound of the engine with ProtoSounds 3?  From what I read from past threads, some did not like the sound of the whistle from the last Premier run with ProtoSounds 2.  Back then some even stated they liked the sound of the whistle from the RailKing version better.  Since, MTH will be making a new sound file with the recording of 611’s whistle after it is restored, I would assume the sound should be better but how will it compare to the sound of Lionel’s model is my question.   Ken

This is the reply I got from Lionel today about the N&W set.

Hello Mr. Cole,

This product is anticipated to ship to our distributors next week.  We cannot say when the distributors will receive this nor when they will ship to their dealers.

We cannot say if there are plans for a 2-car add-on.  The Lionel Marketing Department cannot share plans for future product.  We apologize but because of the nature of our business, future product is made official at the introduction of a new catalog.

Sincerely,

Ironically, had the locomotive been delayed in production with the passenger cars, we might have a loco w/steam-whistle.  But since the loco was reportedly produced between 18-24 months ago, it was one of a few locos caught in the short-sighted decision to be built without the feature.

Yes, lots of positives here. Thanks for pointing out the awesome whistle.

As much as I would love to see that, I don't think we have another 2 years to wait for add on cars. If I can find the Powhatan arrow add on cars I am going to go with them, but going to wait and make sure I get Pocahontas set first.

Is this the old whistle or the new one? A friend has two Santa Fe Northerns, one TMCC and one Legacy and says the TMCC sound is much better.

Thats the new Legacy version. Doug posted the video here on the forum back when the separate sale J's were delivered many months back.

From what I've "heard" regarding the SF Northerns the legacy version is correct, but it lacks the "fullness" of the TMCC version and possibly the prototype.

The MR s3 has a SF whistle. IMO the legacy S3 has a better sounding SF whistle than the  Legacy SF northern. Thats for another thread I suppose

The Legacy J is a homerun in the sound dept.

That is the new Legacy whistle.
