Evening guys, I have 239 issues spanning from March 1975 to Nov/Dec 2014.  That also includes 4 issues of the Slim gauge News.  All are in pristine condition and have been stored in Magazine cases.  My problem is, I don't know what to ask for them, any ideas?  I want to list them in the For Sale/Trade forum but thought I'd ask over here to see if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks for your help, you can contact me off list if you like, e-mail is sptrainnut@att.net, it is much appreciated.

Thanks guys, I roger that about the shipping costs, my plans are to split the costs.  I've donated about 25 years worth of Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman.  I also donated about 6 or 8 years worth of Mainline Modeler to a local train club.  They said they will keep the MLM's and during open houses, they will hand out the others.

Do you think it might be a good idea to suggest a trade for a locomotive or something?

Anyway, thanks so much for your responses.

Hi JEM.

Your a good bloke donating the mags I did the same with the club over here.

I go to England every year to see my son and one year I took half my suitcase full of free train magazines for a fellow modeller over there, didn't cost me anything just scraped in with the weight, coming back would have been different!

Thank you all for your comments, they are very appreciated.  From the first time I started thinking about getting rid of them, I've been thinking about what the costs would be for the shipping, I think they would be astronomical so I think I'm going to see if the local libraries would be interested in them.  Thanks again for you comments, have a good one.

I actually sold off my father-in-law's collection of these when I was closing out his estate - put them on eBay as year sets and was getting on average $20 per complete year set.  You might want to look into that option to see what they are selling for now - seems that this might be one of the very few mags that actually retains any value.

Take a couple of years worth to the Post Office.  See if they will fit in one of 'if it fits it ships' boxes (probably 3 or 4 years worth might fit per box).  Those boxes are not weight dependent but size dependent.  That will give you a base model for your shipping costs.  BTW you've got my interest up!    Russ

Magazines or any printed matter can ship at the "Media Mail rate" at the post office.  It's less than any other shipping method the post office offers.  The only thing that may be less expensive would be to see how many magazines will fit into one of their Priority Mail boxes.

About thirty years ago or so I sold a bunch of Train related magazines that were given to me by a relative.  They were all from the late '30s to the '60s.  I recall getting a decent price for them.  Model Railroader, Model Railroad Craftsmen and I think Trains.

Check what year sets are selling for on eBay -- not what they are listed for, but actual selling prices.  When I was selling year sets I used to average ~$20/yr.  But since these are now available electronically, I don't know what that market is now.
