I only get 3 clanks when I power on my Hudson (1999 year). Was running fine for 30 minutes before. How do I reset or get running again? Thank you.

The three clanks of death. It happens with a dead battery on the PS-1 locos. The fix for that is a Protosound Reset Kit from MTH no. 50-1023. The kit includes a new battery and reset chip.

Is there a way to get the engine running without the sounds for now?
Nope!
Do you know if the PS2 or PS3 engines also need a reset kit when the battery goes dead?
PS2 engines don't need a reset kit. When the battery dies, the engine's memory as to its address and settings drops out and you have to re-add it to your remote. As soon as the power is removed, if the battery can't hold a charge, it drops off again. PS3 engines use a capacitor and different electronics so they don't forget their settings.
Thanks Matt.
David. The reset kit is reusable so if you have any other PS1 engine it is a good thing to have and is not expensive. It only comes with one battery though. Or you may want to change out the batteries with a BCR from J & W Electronics.

Only by eliminating the board and using a bridge rectifier to get DC to the motor. Probably easier to do it right anyhow.
Matt,
When the battery dies, the engine's memory as to its address and settings drops out and you have to re-add it to your remote.
A more accurate answer is:
"When the battery dies, the engine's memory will no longer accept changes to its settings. If you change the engine's DCS ID# while the battery is too weak to accept the change, then you would have to delete the engine from the remote, charge or replace the battery, and re-add it to your remote."
This and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!" This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at OGR’s web store! |
If the reset chip can be used on other PS1 locos, does this mean that the chip does not permanently stay in the loco once it is running again?

Correct. You follow directions and replace battery with new charged one in kit, power up with Make PS Chip, get two dings. Power Down and wait 30secs. Remove chip and place original back in and power up. G
