Joe, what year? Lionel's first automatic box coupler came out in 1938. In very late 1938 or early 1939 Lionel changed the sliding shoe to have a small fiber piece in it which made the shoe ride over switch rails/center rail so no electrical contact was made; the early style would contact rails and couplers would open. The 1938-1939 couplers were unique in having a large, black Bakelite base, which is frequently found broken. In 1940 Lionel changed the top of the box, adding a simulated knuckle coupler on the top of the box instead of the previous two ridges, and changed the uncoupling armature to a solenoid-operated pin.
