Just received the new Lionel Heisler (#6), realize that it doesn't have the Orange module.  Didn't have any problem loading into the Cab2 manually. (Do not have a sensor track).  After running it a bit, can't say I am very impressed, mechanically I think its great, however the electronics I've been able to identify is not very impressive, especially given the price.  I have yet get the whistle to emit any steam/smoke, and all the features seem to be the same as any TMCC engine I have.  (Also have the VL Big Boy.)  Maybe I'm missing something here, don't know.  But think this will be my last Lionel engine, I think MTH has a much better product, (Wonder if I could upgrade the Heisler to PS2, much less PS3, (weak Humor)).

Since the Legacy Heisler doesn't have whistle steam, that's probably why it won't emit any.

This is the product number of the Legacy version, 6-82813, yep no whistle steam.

Gents, I thought the latest production run of Legacy Heislers DOES HAVE whistle-steam???  I'm pretty sure I saw some of the early videos posted here with a nice whistle-steam effect.   Then again, I might have been dreaming of seeing the whistle-steam since Lionel priced this little gem into the stratosphere.  Almost qualifies as a VisionLine product on pricing alone!

It's definitely a ton of buckeroos for such a small locomotive, but Lionel's pricers seem to be smoking some pretty strong stuff these days.

Don, check on the forum for Sean's (SANDJAM) early review of the Lionel Legacy Heisler.  I think he also purchased the Meadow River model, and I recall Sean saying something about two smoke units (and probably corresponding switches too)... one for the stack, and one for whistle-steam effect.  Perhaps I'm mistaken on this... but the catalog definitely has the whistle-steam splash-banner predominantly featured.  Double-check the manual for location of the switches.

As for which company offers a better product.  There's no question that right now MTH's offerings are MUCH better price/performers.  Not always cheap, mind you... but definitely better price/performers.  However, lots of model train enthusiasts are goo-goo / ga-ga over Legacy Railsounds, so they part with their money accordingly and pay Lionel's price premium.

Folks are paying around $1,100 for Lionel's latest Heisler (on a $1300 MSRP), whereas MTH's Climax loco (a similarly small logging jewel) can be had for $825 or so (on a $900 MSRP).  Not an insignificant difference, for sure!!!

Right off the Lionel website, I do not see whistle steam, both of these are cab #6: 6-82813 & 6-82811 HOWEVER, I just watched SANDJAM's video and yes indeed there's whistle steam. Very interesting.

David,

I agree with you!

1.  The 2015 Catalog has the big bubble indicating whistle steam, the representative picture show it.       2.  The User Manual has it discribed with how to insert the smoke fluid and location AND use of the switches.

3. Found 2 locations for adding smoke, but not any function yet.  AND both switches.

4. Suppose to have operating marker lights, haven't found those either.

HOPEFULLY, I'm just plain dumb, or too much of a novice.  Just some thing others may want to be aware of BEFORE putting out these bucks.  SO far Poooooo on Lionel.

The product page doesn't mention whistle steam: http://www.lionel.com/products...c-heislers-6-6-82813

I found a video on YouTube with whistle smoke, so perhaps the product page is in error.

Well, that's better than the Berkshire's from a few years ago, when Lionel's catalog and specs had whistle-steam listed but the feature was dropped in the production model.  Dealers couldn't give those steamers away after that snafu.

Mike, check Sean's video on the forum and youtube... the whistle-steam effect is demonstrated right there for your viewing pleasure.  Thankfully, I wasn't dreaming after all.  But it's still overpriced even with whistle-steam.

David

David,

After I pasted the page from the Lionel site I found Sean's video and yep, there it is, whistle steam. This time the website doesn't match the actual item in reverse. You get something not listed.

Whether it's overpriced is another discussion altogether.

Mike

I have this engine and it does have whistle steam. Make sure both smoke unit switches are on (under the hatch on top of the cab), and that you've added fluid to the whistle steam unit by removing the dyno.

What other features do you believe are missing that make this a legacy engine aside from not having an orange module? (not a criticism, just wanting to know your opinion) The whistle quills, and it has all the other standard Legacy sounds.

Currently, I have two issues;

- Steam/Smoke effect on whistle inoperable.  (Because I DO NOT have a sensor track, MAYBE that is what is preventing it.  I have both smoke switches ON, (turned on prior to power applied to the track, and fluid added below the dynamo.)  Second issue is Marker Lights, documents say they exist, but I cannot find any (off or on) anywhere on the engine.  ?????? Quill-able whistle is there, such as it is.

EDIT:  Just called Lionel customer service, re: smoke, let engine run for a 1/2 to try to prime the smoke generator, and a 30 second blast to see if it works.  RE: Marker Lights, they don't exist, probably fell off during production.  (Must have a lot laying around on the floor.)

No marker lights.

If the whistle steam isn't working, then you might want to call Lionel.
