I pre-ordered the Lionel E9 A-A set (6-39612) when it was first announced.  It finally arrived today, and as expected (and hoped) all was as it should be - everything was there, in good condition, and worked fine.

Detail on the cast ABS body is good but not awesome: there is nothing to be the least bit upset about, but it doesn't make me go "Oh wow!  Look at the detail!" either.  It's as good as any Lionel or MTH has been.  Rivets, vents and body seams, etc. are crisp and nicely rendered, shapes and edges sharp or smooth as they should be.  The windows look like cast thick plastic, showing their unrealistic edges a bit, but okay: I might get in there and replace them with something more realistic sometime. Cast-in roof detail is  nice.  There are separate fans under all the roof's grills, large and small, and they turn if I blow on them, but they don't turn by themselves when the unit is running.  The controls for each unit are accessible through a removable magnetically-held hatch on the roof near the back.   The detailed metal side vents (separately applied, it appears) are very nicely done.  There are a few grab handles and such also separately applied, and nice bellows diaphragms between the units, which do not quite meet, but almost.  Spring-loaded doors on the units open as shown in the photos below.

Running.  Like all recent Legacy units  have, this unit runs extremely well conventionally (all I run), good linear control of speed, while eing very smooth at quite low speeds - I didn't measure but it as slow or slower than I will want to run - around ten mph or less - and as slow or slower than any other diesels units I have. I did not test high speeds or how well it pulls.

Sound.  The sound is good, but not outstanding.  I suppose you have to pay Vision prices now before you can expect to get speakers and sound in both units.  Anyway, more sound would be good - I turned up the volume all the way and I'd like just a bit more.  The diesel sound itself is okay - it does not sound like generic diesel but more detailed: I have no idea what an E9 sounds like so I can't judge how real it sounds (I actually did hear one, once upon a time, but that was 58 years ago and I hope I will be forgiven for not recalling all the nuances of that sound).  Regardless, the E9s sound is not nearly as impressive as on the Legacy U30C - among my diesels that is the gold standard by which I judge the sound of all other dieselss.  In fairness, E9s had two-cycle diesel engines,  so in the real world they would not have all the valve clatter of the GE four-cycle engines, which is what I like most about the U30C sound: this may be why I'm disappointed.   Bell and whistle are good, but again, not outstanding.

Smoke is outstanding.  Wow! This is one smoking fiend.  I love it!  See the photos and the short video.

I'm going to run this a bit this week, then it goes on the shelf to await the arrival of the UP and Olympian four-car sets I order along with it for it to pull.   Hopefully it will not be too long until they arrive, then I will have a train, not just two nice locos.

Overall conclusion: I'm pleased but don't consider them exceptional bargains.   They are good looking, nicely detailed, good sounding, great smoking, really good runners.  They were not bargains, at least at their list price, but in a world where Vision Big Boys list for $2,700, a list price a bit over 1/3 of that for these puppies seems in line, if not quite reasonable.  I think they are definitely worth the $766 discount price I saw available on the internet, if not list price - I don't think anyone pays that any more.

Great review Lee thank you.  I know you are a pretty handy guy, will you be fixing the pilot or closing the gap between the units?  I was disappointed the rear unit does not have sound.  Would it be possible to add a sound card, power supply and speaker to rear unit?  How would it know to ramp up RPM?

If any does any of these mods please post a how to!  I would really like to do this with these engines.

thanks

I wonder why, too.  Takes a lot of work and there is no reason why they should open.  They are spring loaded, too, so they won't stay open should you want to position a figure in an open doorway, etc.  It's a silly feature, but I've seen it on other locos.

I would much rather had had a small fan inside that pulled air through the roof vents: that would have spun them, which would have been way cool.

yes, so kids can stick their little fingers in them until they jam open. A very nice feature.

Lee,

These to me look fantastic, sorry to hear about the sound, but diesels are just diesels sometimes.

I agree on the U30c. And I still like fireing up my TMCC ALCO 420C's just to hear the rumble.

Question, during the video the sound cuts out, is that because in conventional a battery is required, don't know because I run everything in command.

BTW, when are you going to buy a command system? When you do I think you will never come out of the train room.

I think You said you run conventially, not Legacy?  I do not mean to pry, however, are you able to run In Legacy Cab 2?  I have converted all of my operations to Legacy and wonder how these Beautuful engines work in Legacy...It looks as if they couple close to each other in your pictures...what is the minimum curve recommended for these units?

ALso, Last, but not Least, Your Layout is Awesome...Thanks for Your Review.

Just for the record, running conventional is fine, it's just that the Command Performance that Legacy Offers, is the Wow for me.

clem k: there seems to be weight on the non-powered axle - it has some tension wiehgt on it when on the track.  Yes, there are traction tires.

J Daddy - I have not checked if I can/should put a battery in the E9s.  I accept the momentary lapse in sound, etc., as I change direction.   last time I toop apart a diesel to put a battery in it the body was warped and it would not go back together without damage, so i will def for now.

leapinlarry - I would assume the locos run fine in Legacy: no reason why they should not.  I have not/never will go to Legacy or DCS or DCC: I completely recognize the advantages - really, I do - impressive when I visit friends who have it (at least when it all works), but I like running conventional, and frankly I don't like the complexity of the systems: I do that type of stuff for a living - my trains are my escape from that. If and when Lionel expands the Lionchief Plus system I may be persuaded to go with it: while it can't do all Legacy can, it can do enough and is much simpler and more robust.  Int he mean time, I like conventional - no, I love it!

Nice looking engines, Lee (the engine king).  However, I rode UP's City of St. Louis several times as a high school kid in the 1960s, between Salt Lake City to Los Angeles.  I remember that the horn(s) used on them was the multi-chime (I don't know the correct terminology) with the same sound as UP's GP-7s and GP-9s.  Not quite the same sound Lionel's latest example has.

UP's E9s were almost always lashed up with an E9B unit, with the usual arrangement of A-B-A or more commonly, A-B-B.  You would seldom, if ever see an E9 AA arrangement.

One more thing, the upper side grills had no vertical bars like the "checkerboard" look Lionel uses on these.

Other than that, they are great-looking engines.

Vern

Yes, the horn did not turn me on by some, like Spence, like it.  And it does sound good, just not at all like I remember they sounded.

I would love to have a B unit to go with these guys, too.  I thought of buying another set: you could butcher the non-powered unit to get the body end to make the powered unit into a B unit, but no . . . I will wait for Lionel to hopefully do it right and offers one.
