Hello everyone. I have a Nikon  D3200 with a 18-53 lens and I have been running down by the tracks lately. What would you recommend for future lenses? what type of filters should I buy ? What else should I have in my camera bag? What brands would you buy if its not a Nikon? I have had a great time recently down by the tracks. I picked this camera at Walmart  and they don't offer much for this camera. So give me tips, Give me links to stores, Give me  some camera offerings

          Thank You    Scot

The lense you got should be a 18-55. If I was taking pictures of real train the lense in my bag is 55-200VR. This is a sleeper lense and pretty sharp at 200mm. One thing to remember, your camera has no internal focus motor. Any lense you buy will have to have a internal motor in the lense for auto focus. Also with the smaller croped sensor in the camera, take the lense and multiply it by 1.5. Your 18-55mm lense is equal to a 27-82.5mm lense.

This was taken with a D80 with 55-200VR.

You will want to get a polarizing filter. For outdoor work, they are indispensable. By rotating the outer ring of the filter you can change the amount of light reflection you want or don't want. And when used at the proper angle from the sun, you can create very dramatic sky effects (deep blue, etc.) with this filter. I bought my PL from Wal-Mart, as a matter of fact, for around $20.00. Came with another useful filter, the Ultraviolet (UV) which is good to leave on the lens all the time when not using the PL. Also protects the lens itself from scratches!

I would never take outdoor pics w/o a PL filter unless it was very low light and the filter was impeding me from capturing an image. (The PL does drop your light gathering capacity by 1-1.5 stops.)

I would agree with getting the 55-200 lens. Good performer.

I have a Nikon D50 and I'm pretty sure the motor is in the camera body not the lens but I could be wrong. I thought Canon was the only one that had the motors in the lens.
