One point about the subway - it's $2.75 per ride. And a buck for the Metro Card (card is good for a year and can be refilled). Or $3 for a single ride. There is a reduced fare (half off) for those 65 or older or with disabilities, but there's an application process.

If you are making more than 3 trips in a day it is cheaper to get a day or weekend pass.

The tree over Radio City Music Hall went up the night of October 31st.

My team have been working on installing store windows for a week already.

The giant toy train that is usually at 1271 6th Ave ( Ave of the Americas.) will probably not go in this year because they are having a hard time replacing the two tone grey fancy pavement there. They installed some over the summer but the job was so badly botched they tore it out and it is being done again. So no big train in a pool this year.

How about a little Train Shopping too.

Happy  Holidays  Days.

There is only one Train store on 45th now and for last ten years or so.  Alan Spitz's store The Red Caboose.

I just found this partial subway car in a store on 120 West  42 street near Times Square. It was in Mohave CA for years and apparently it was installed in this state in 2014 and the store is now closed but the half car remains. imageimageimageimage

The New York Botanical Gardens Holiday Train Show runs from November 19, 2016 to January 16, 2017. A 20 minute train ride from Grand Central Terminal on the Harlem or New Haven line of Metro North, the NYBG is located in the Rose Hill section of the Bronx. It is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance and if you're driving there is plenty of parking inside the gates. Check the train schedules, not all trains stop at the NYBG station.

For serious train lovers only.

Although well off the walking tour, it should also be noted that on two Sundays in December, The N J HiRailers will be holding open houses. If you are coming to the New York area, have taken in all that midtown Manhattan has to offer during the holidays, you might want to consider a side trip to Paterson, NJ to check out a tremendous 185 ft O Gauge layout. If you have never been to one of these open houses, you will be amazed.

Sunday, December 4th

Sunday, December 18th

Call the HiRailers for information.

Interesting! They did the same thing in 2001 after 9/11.

Rock Center 2001

I was actually referring to the tree base. The flags are from the NBC election coverage.

They change them once a week or so. States, Countries, and All American flags alternate. In the holiday period they switch to gold and silver usually.

After a big event like the Pulse nightclub shooting sometimes all the flags but the center one come down and the center flies half staff.

I don't see a base. Looks like a bunch of pallets to me. Doesn't seems to be in this photo taken 11/12/16.

What do you think?

Haha. Nearly.

I simply stayed at work and shot this through one of the windows I just spent the last two months or so building. There were a lot fewer people this year but security was very very tight.  Here is the same tree this AM before the rain. imageIt really is quite massive. It is almost 7 stories high. The scafolding just came down this week. They grafted at least one additional trees worth of branches onto this one to fill it out to perfection. It is really interesting to watch the procedure over time. imageimage

The Christmas Season will be here before we know it. It's not too early to make plans to visit Mid Town Manhattan during the Holidays.

Here is the 2017-18 Holiday Season schedule for the train attractions.

This year the Lionel display at Grand Central Terminal will open to the public on November 13, 2017 and run through February 11, 2018.

As usual Santa Land at Macy's Herald Square opens after Santa arrives in the Thanksgiving Day Parade on Friday November 24, 2017 and is open through Christmas Eve.

This year's Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting is scheduled for Wednesday November 29, 2017.

Opening October 27, 2017 and running through February 25, 2018, The New York Historical Society's Holiday Train Exhibit will feature the new layout created by our friend Roger Farkash and the gang at TW Trainworx. It is located at 170 Central Park West, between 76th and 77th Streets, and is a short subway ride and a short walk from several locations along the walking tour.

There is a new train attraction in Mid Town Manhattan, right off of Times Square, called Gulliver's Gate. It is similar in description to the Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg Germany. It features HO Trains and is reported to be a $40M project. It opened earlier this year and is open every day except Christmas. There is a charge:  $36 for adults and $27 for children and seniors.

The New York Botanical Gardens Holiday Train Show runs from November 22, 2017 to January 15, 2018. This is a huge G gauge train display featuring over 100 New York City landmarks made out of all natural materials. A 20 minute train ride from Grand Central Terminal, the NYBG is located in the Rose Hill section of the Bronx. It is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance and if you're driving there is plenty of parking inside the gates.

Here are a few photos from Gulliver's Gate.

GULLIVER'S GATE

Located at 216 W 44th Street, this layout is a $40M project that opened to the public earlier this year. The exhibit will include miniature scale models of well-known sites and places from our world, and fictional worlds, connected by HO scale train tracks and highways featuring all manners of transportation known to mankind – from horses and elephants to hot air balloons, jet planes and space shuttles. There is a $36 entrance fee for adults and $27 for children and seniors 65+.

THE INITIAL POST IN THIS THREAD IS UPDATED AS WELL!

Have a great Holiday Season!

So the big question I have this year is doe the Museum at GCT have the TW layout again? there was a rumor that Lionel sold it off at the private Stout auction in August.

The TW layout was purchased outright by the MTA Museum. There was no auction involved. The TW crew will still be handling the set up and tear down.

The first day of 2017 Skipsmas was yesterday 12/22. It's now become a two day event! First day was a quick look at the Rockefeller Center tree, Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and then a look at Macy's windows, before dinner at Carmines.IMG_5677IMG_5679IMG_5684IMG_5698IMG_5700IMG_5703IMG_5709IMG_5716Rockefeller Center 2017Saks 5th Ave 2017IMG_5724IMG_5726IMG_5726Train at Radio CityIMG_5659IMG_5661IMG_5663IMG_5664IMG_5665IMG_5667IMG_5670IMG_1043IMG_1044IMG_1049IMG_1057IMG_1058IMG_1059IMG_1060IMG_1061IMG_1066
