The Arcade and Attica Railroad steam excursion which departs from Arcade, NY is a great value at only $15.  Sign up on the GET MY PERKS or SEIZE THE DEAL websites and get buy one get on free round trip tickets. Again, that is two adult round trip for only $15.  At the station and on board you can get for just $1.00(cans of soda, bags of popcorn, candy bars).  When the train arrives at Curriers, NY there is a nice small station/mini museum with photos and railroad memorabilia.  In addition there is a nice enclosed and covered pavilion which has $2.00 charbroiled hot dogs, $1.00 (cans of soda, ice cream bars, ice cream sandwiches, and fudgsicles).

I apologize for seeming critical, but I really care about encouraging steam preservation. I was involved many years ago with such an operation. When I take the kids 400 miles to see a steam engine I am not interested in a two dollar hot dog. I want to know a list of reasonable motels in the area, and good inexpensive restaurants. Is there a bus station? The fifteen bucks is very cheap, but it's not a deal breaker. Maybe for a special for folks in the area. I want a window seat, which is not always the case, a chance to pose a kid in the engineer's seat (yes...I'd pay five bucks a kid for that)...not necessarily a cab ride, and a list of other things to do in the immediate area. I like the idea of a banjo or guitar player singing songs on the train.  I'm trying to gently suggest that there is a marketing issue here. Just trying to make constructive criticism (if there is such a thing). Peace.

Tommy, the ride is only a little over 6 miles long one way. For anyone in the area it is a very pleasant ride in country to Arcade, NY. Mapquest will give you directions. Plan to visit if you are in the area but don't plan a cross country trip just to ride the train. They also have an operating 44 tonner which has been filling in while the 2-8-0 has been getting refurbished.

I will get down there a few times a year just for the ride in the country. Thanks to heads up from the OP I will get down and take some pics and maybe ride up to Curriers for a few hots.

Gnnpnut, and anyone else taking the 765 out of Buffalo, consider traveling over to Letchworth State Park and taking a few pics of the bridge the 765 will be traveling over.

Fine place to spend some time.

Here is some hotel information that will put you 5-10 minutes from Bison Yard which the 765 excursion will depart from.  They are also just outside of Buffalo which will put you a little closer to the Arcade & Attica excursion.

The two hotels on Dingens in Cheektowaga are 5 minutes away and the three on Slade Ave. in West Seneca are 10 minutes away.

If you like barbeque when you are done with the Arcade & Attica on Saturday there is a really cool roadside stand about 5 minutes away on Route 16 called Krolick's which serves the best ribs and chicken combo around.  Here is a link.

There is a bus directly from New York City to Attica and return every saturday. Fare for adults round trip is $60. Children $25. It is not listed on Greyhound. It is a private bus service for people visiting Attica Prison. Do a Google search. It stops in Manhatten, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx at around midnight and arrives at Attica at 7:20. Leaves Attica to go back to NYC at 3:15 and arrives back in NYC at 11 P.M.
