NO SG Traction Tires for Me!

Art how did you alter your loco to ditch the grooved wheels?  I agree that tires are always annoying and often unnecessary.  I've been wanting to do this on some of my O-gauge for a long time.  Please tell!!

I agree!  I removed the traction tire wheel sets from my personal locomotives, 400E, 4-4-0 ESE and the coal train.  All they did was make a mess as they wear.  The locomotives have plenty of traction to pull what I want with regular wheel sets.

The locomotives with bild-a-loco type drivers that "drop into place" is easy to change when the center rail pickup plate is removed.  Love that option!

I had two extra sets of drivers/axles/bearings from an MTH 381 and simply replaced the Brute's two traction-tired sets with those. The spokes were the same color and the gears the same size, so it was a simple "drop-in" operation! Also gave me a chance to lube the worm gears on the can motor shafts. 

 

 

 

 

 

Obviously that technique won't work for 99% of O-scale steam locos.  When are the manufacturers going to wise up and give us an option!  Grrr...

Having "options" would be nice, but considering the tiny niche market that Standard Gauge and tinplate trains represent, I'm happy there still remains one solid manufacturer of SG and tinplate trains, i.e., MTH!
