I recently took a chance at ordering some cheap people.  100 O Scale people for $8.81 and .99 shipping... from China!  I did not expect much after reading some of the reviews.

There were MANY duplicates.  Not just the molds of people, but the paint schemes too.

There were mostly standing people.   Not too many sitting.

These were not your "Front Line" people.  They were "back of the layout"  a few feet away type quality.

But I think I may have found a better use.  I really wanted sitting people for all of our coach cars.  Years ago I bought a pack of Beep People.  Good quality and at the time a pack of 50 was about $25.  However, recently I saw a pack for $45, so I don't know if the price really went up that much or if the vendor priced them too high.

I figured for passenger cars, people don't have to be perfect.

So I added a little heat on the subject, bent the hips and bent the knees and voila... cheap seated person.

First I put my burner on as low as possible without flaming out.

I held the figure using pliers over heat on the hips for just a second or two.

Then I used the workbench to bend the hip 90 degrees.

By now the plastic is cool enough to touch but still soft.  The knees can be bent using your hands.

About 10-20 seconds later, the plastic has cooled and hardened again.

The video shows a mixed of the Beep People and the Chinese People.  It's hard to tell the difference and they don't look too bad in a moving train.

Not a bad idea. I bought a huge bag of these, mixed between standing and sitting, off ePay from China over a year ago. The standing ones, I was always going to use inside structures where you could see in windows, when the outside figures would be woodland scenics, arttista, and stuff like that.

But it never occured to me to bend the legs into sitting poses, I like that!

I also purchased those people from China.

The vendor was "wehonest" and I am very happy with both the seated version and the standing versions.

I purchased 100 ALL seated for 21.99 and there are six different poses and 6 different color schemes.

I just started to use them and I am adding some of my own colors to mix it up a bit.

I figured I did all the fruit in my fruit stand I can paint some people also.

I use rubber cement.  Dab a little on their back and rump.  It holds them in their seat well and if you change your mind, you can remove it by rubbing with your finger.

I use a hot glue gun and it works well for me. I think I have done almost 20 passenger cars now. Easy and fun to do.

Bob,

I agree with you. In the real world, people in a crowd become faceless, so an O-gauge crowd should be a faceless, nameless magnitude. On a layout, viewing people from a few feet away makes facial detail irrelevant.

It is the overall impression that counts. Not once has anyone viewing my layout made note of all of the people having black hair, and having indistinguishable facial features. Typically I hear, "Wow! Look at all of those people waiting for the train." When a train goes by I hear, "Wow! The trains have people inside."

A scale eyeball is a tiny dot. A scale mouth is about 0.04 of an inch in length, and a scale nose is less than 0.04.

Did you notice that the people in the dome car are 1/100 scale?

I've bought from wehonest for several years now.  Great service and really good prices.

They list several O scale items, such as street lights, signals, fencing, in addition to people.  And as noted, their prices were really good.  But recently, looking for their sitting people, I noticed that the prices have jumped significantly.  People that used to be about a quarter each not are running close to a dollar each, street lights I've bought for 50 cents to a dollar each are now running about three dollars each.  Now I am holding off to see if this is a permanent increase in pricing.

Bobby, what size people did you use for the full length vista dome?  I ask because I need to buy some to populate a similar LIONEL car.

Also, assuming you used LEDs to light the dome, how many LEDs did you use?

Thanks.

This 18" MTH car got a variety of people... Beep, K-Line, GGD, and some from China... 50 in total.. filled it up.

The people in the dome looked oversized. 1/48 people are just too tall for up there. I shoulda used the 1/64 or 1/75 people like I did in the Atlas CZ dome.

I used hot glue the first time with the Beep People.  Over time, some of the people jumped out of there seats and became unruly in how they occupied a train car.

This last go around I used a glue called FoamTac.  It's like a type of clear rubber cement.  We'll have to see how that works.  I like it for my model planes.

That is an extremely clever idea that could also be used in other ways. I'm thinking of modifying a sitting or standing figure by moving the arms so it could be the driver of a 1:43 car. There are not many of those available (Arista has a few, but they are pricey).

I generally use silicone adhesive to attach passengers to seats. It sticks to almost anything, has great gap-filling properties and is easy to work with. For situations where I may want to move or remove the passengers later (mainly Standard Gauge) I use museum putty or sticky dots.

Pingman,

I use 1/75 size people in the domes only. Everywhere else I use 1/50 people. You will need standing and sitting figures. It will also be necessary to chop down the legs of standing people a bit so you can see their heads when looking through the car windows. Be sure to put people walking in the aisles, and some standing people chatting with seated people. Like a guy trying to pickup a gal.

I use hot glue to secure the figures.

Bobby, I think you have severely cramped the roll on the guy trying to pick up the gal, by hot gluing him to the floor.  What if she agrees, and the both of them are just left to wonder about what could have been, whilst being hot-glued in place.  Oh, the inhumanity!
