How about the blizzard of 1899 in south central PA with the 1st train to make it into town....stopping at the station on Carlisle St.  Either an H1 or an H2 odd on front; still trying to locate a picture of the 2nd engine a few cars back on this train.

 

 

and blasting through the center square.

I think that you've already seen this, but I found a clearer photograph of your great grandfather's locomotive on this web page. If you haven't already seen it, then I hope that it is of some interest. 

 

There is an example of the locomotive class (E-8) at the B&O Railroad Museum (#545).
