Very cool.  Piggybacking on HW's suggestion...I put some of the ash from my barbeque grill in a ziplock bag then some of Dennis Brennan's coal and shook it up.  That gave the coal a used look. I filled the pit with that then I accented with more of the ash from the grill.  I buried LED blinking fire lights but I did not install smoke.  Now I have to do that!

I thank you all for the very kind comments and input, this unit is the actually just a prototype

it needs some tweaking, and also some fine adjustment. I will build a small diorama to go with this operating ash pit, it will then be displayed at Trainstock which we can all see it and take lots of photos and video's of it.
