I received 5 of these building kits and want to start working on them.  My wife has a large collection of Acrylic hobby/craft paints from Michaels, they clean up with water, and a large set of brushes to go along.  What, if anything, would I use to prime them then seal after painting?

That's what I use on them, 99 cent acrylics from Michael's or Hobby Lobby. Wash the pieces in mild soapy water to get rid of the oily residue from production, let dry thoroughly and you should be good to go. I didn't use any primer or sealer after painting. I think some folks use Dullcoat (sp) either before or after painting or maybe both. Not sure how that goes as I have never tried the Dullcoat method.

Craft paints are great for buildings. Wash the walls, and I suggest using a cheap primer in a spray can such as what Walmart sells. You don't need a fancy primer, just something to stick to the plastic. If you intend to mortar, I would seal the craft paint with a clear-coat. Again, doesn't matter much what brand. Flat finish would be best, of course. I use Krylon matte, but dulcoat is good as well.

Have fun!

I've done maybe 2 doz Ameritown buildings. Depending on what scheme you want you can keep the base color (red) and after a clean wash apply whatever mortar color you want and then detail the various trim packages with craft/acrylic paints from Hobby Lobby/ Walmart etc. I have done several buildings with a Limestone/ Sandsone/Pebble spray paint from Hobby Lobby/Walmart....Krylon, Rust-O-Leum etc then I do the trim work. These sprays give a somewhat sand finish which is just a different look. Some of my buildings I spray  a Clear Acrylic Sealer(gloss) and others I just leave the more dull look.  Currently working on six (6) different Ameri-town buildings for xmas gifts for the six grand kids. Each building will have a different paint scheme ( in some cases colors that the kids are crazy about ). I've also plan on each building having unique signage. The buildings will have a theme attached to my grandkids name...Ex My grandson Tyler is an all around athlete so his building is "TYLER'S SPORTING GOODS; my granddaughter Kylie is into clothes, fashions etc so her building " Kylie's Fashion Boutique". I am certainly having fun with each design and hopefully all will be ready by Xmas.

My main reason was for my son's to be able to add to their own train layouts these xmas gifts. My wife and I managed to give each grandchild their own distinct train set which my son's display on their own layouts. We made sure that on their 1st birhdays/xmas each were gifted with these sets. It's my way of continuing my love of trains thru my grandchildren.  I am having fun and hopefully the grandchildren will continue the love of trains. With the Ameri-town building kits you can do wonders.
