Parts for Railing

Please excuse my ignorance here but are you referring to railings on an engine or a bldg.?  I'm having one of those days...

I'm referring to a locomotive, diesels in this case right now.  I figure if I can find the little fixtures and properly sized wire, I can hack one together pretty easily.

Precision Scale Diesel Locomotive Catalog (No. 3) page 41. Shows a .025 core for the rail.  Several options. Link this page for a better view.  Parts listed appear to be plastic.

I've purchased bronze Phosphur wire from HobbyLinc.com. Have also seen it listed on Tichy Train Group's website.

Yeah I was going to say Precision Scale or Des Plaines Hobbies.

For anyone looking for pipe railing stanchions. We sell them for use on building loading docks, bridges etc.  They are brass and the pipe fittings have the holes already through them to accept .020 wire for railings and have a flange at their base with a spru that you can insert into a hole to mount. You can buy them on our website.

Can you get stanchions that will accept, 0.72 wire? The 0.72 wire is used on std.-gauge for handrails. It doesn't hurt too ask.

 They have them listed, but no illustrations or descriptions.  I'm not sure what I'd get, they don't even say what material they are, plastic or metal.

These look like what I need, but I'd like them in metal if possible.  The ones CSX-AL posted are metal, but they aren't the plain ones for locomotive railings.  I didn't see something like this on his site.

The top sets that are listed here I believe are brass.

I just got this catalog, it has both brass and plastic parts, so I assume what is not listed as plastic, is brass.

Since you have the catalog, can you tell me how long they are?  I can't read the graphic well enough to see what length is denoted.

It doesn't give you any more information than what is shown (except for the price.)  I'll show you a picture here of the cover (I think it was $8.00 maybe?)

Okay, sending it shortly.  I had to order it.  Its on the first page in the catalogs tab on their website.  The front of it looks different than the one they sent though.

Susan, it's a different catalog, I've already downloaded all the stuff they have for download.  Download time is not an issue, I have 75mbit fiber service.

 I downloaded the steam one, but the diesel one you have has different parts.

I believe the O scale Diesel Catalog has not yet been put on line. HO Diesel is on line. You want to check to be sure you are ordering the correct parts.   My original post was from my O scale paper Diesel Catalog.  Their On-line catalogs and order system are at the most, a couple of years in the making, and appear to be an on-go-ing project. IMO still probably the best bet is the very nice paper catalogs listed on their website.   There are minimum price orders, $20, less than $20 there is a $5 surcharge, they do try to push the business to their dealer network, eg. PD Hobbies.  There is also a considerable wait time (3 weeks).

Largest catalog is O/On3 Steam Locomotive, which is available on line. 349 pages of parts with diagrams/pictures of the parts and another 100 or so pages of a price list. IMO not a bad reference source.  There is a note that it is not available in hard copy.  Mike CT

Yes, I have both the Steam and Freight & Pass catalogs - excellent resource materials.  Well worth having available in your library if you are going to be building and/or repairing/restoring stuff.

We had an interesting discussion about the Scenic Express printed catalogs at the Pittsburgh Home and Garden Show where we had set up the Fort Pitt Highrailers modular display. Scenic Express had several beautiful displays as part of the set-up.   I was surprised at the cost of producing a paper catalog in addition to Scenic Express on line catalog.  The number approached (6) figures. 

Precision Scale most likely has looked at the cost of the catalogs even though they charge for them. 

World's Changing IMO.  You gotta sell a lot of $2 parts, or static flock, to pay for those catalogs.  Mike.

That is correct, it is the O-Gauge diesel catalog.  I think the HO can be downloaded digitally, but the O can not.  That has to be ordered.  

Thanks all for the input, I'm going to order some of the ones Mike pointed out, as well as a couple of pieces from the steam catalog, I'm sure I'll have no problem making the $30 minimum.

K&S metals can supply brass rod that should fit the stanchions.

I don't see any way to order from them Mike.  I also don't see .025 brass rod, though they have music wire that size.

K&S metals displays can be found in different hobby, crafts, and hardware stores.  I have ordered K&S metal parts from Walthers.    .025 brass wire not currently in stock.

PSC General Use Sundries and Specialty Parts Catalog #9748,  shows  straight brass wire (GH-4871) .024"  pkg. of 12   (12" lengths).  Next sizes are .020 and .028.    You could add it to your order.

There was a recent thread on bending wire . Tapered round nose pliers were mentioned.

What is the price on the GH-4871 .024 straight wire?  I'll need that for the order form.

I have the round nose pliers and a set specifically made for bending wire at various radius bends, so I think I'm set there.

And, you can get 0.025 phosphorbronze wire from Tichy.  Generally, I just use 0.022 brass from Detail Assoc. seeing that the solder with fill that 0.003 that I can't see anyway...

Looks like it's time to place that order.  I'll try calling them after I get my ducks in a row, that does seem easier.
