Let's resume this thread with more pictures, photos, and information on the colorful passenger trains.  This installation is the Atlantic Coast Line's "Champion" which operated between New York and Miami.  Information for this post is supplied by "Streamliner Memories" on-line article that is very readable.  There is also a recent thread going into great detail on consists, etc.  For this thread, it's primarily about the photos and artwork of this train.

The purple/silver/yellow livery of the ACL champion E units is terrific.

Some explanation about several of the pictures.  The postcard showing the FEC locomotives with the Champion is included because although the Champion operated from NY to Miami, ACL did not own trackage rights for the route.  From Jacksonville, FL to Miami, the train was operated by FEC.  North of Richmond the train was operated by RF&P and PRR.

The photo of the ACL E3A and the EMD FT is included because both were built in 1939.

The photo of the ACL E7's "under the wire" is included to show the locomotives leased to PRR when PRR was short locomotive power.

And the observation car photo is included because the Champion did not operate the more popular boat tail style observation cars; choosing, instead, to operate flat end observation cars which could be coupled mid-train.

Finally, the third from the last picture is a print depicting ACL E-7's done by Tony Howe.

Not being an ACL enthusiast myself, and having done minimal research for this post, any errors pointed out in the subsequent replies will be welcome.

Pat, I too love the GN EB.  And the PRR was featured on a "Trains and Locomotives" show a few weeks back.  I have only a passing interest in PRR, but the show used period film showing PRR at Horseshoe Curve; the non-steam motive power models PRR used probably exceeded that of all other railroads.  And there was a scene from an Army-Navy game with more GG-1's than could be counted.

Bob, love the picture; thanks for posting.

In the film aired by TandL, there were five-stripe and single-stripe GG-1's in Tuscan and Brunswick green.  Those things were massive when compared to the prototype passenger cars they hauled.  Apologies for being late to the party when it comes to GG-1 appreciation.

Here's a track diagram of the yard adjacent to Municipal Stadium which was issued as part of PRR General Order 805 for the 1954 game. This was Greenwich Yard which was a very busy facility in South Philly. Running the specials was a massive undertaking as the yard needed to be cleared of freight cars so the passenger trains could pull in. Interestingly, some of the tracks were not electrified so the Gs pulling into these tracks would lower their pantographs and coast past the AC motor stop signs. Diesel switchers would then switch equipment around while the game was being played so everything was ready to go for the trip home.

While many, like me, think of the NP North Coast Limited as the Loewy two-tone green dome cars pulled by EMD F-7's and F-9's, the NCL existed long-before the diesels arrived.  Also, NP was the first railroad to use the 4-8-4 wheel arrangement and, hence, that wheel arrangement is commonly know as the "Northern."

To publicize the new locomotive, NP commissioned Austrialian artist Gustav Krollmann to paint pictures which NP made into posters.  For more information on Krollmann and NP's use of art, visit Streamliner Memories from which these pictures and information were sourced.
