thanks Gunrunnerjohn.  this is a conventional loco.  I do have tmcc.  I was looking at the z-stuff 1206 trolley controller as a possibility.  also would lionel's ir unit work?

It's not clear how you'd do it with the Lionel 153IR, to reverse your locomotive you need two power interruptions.  You'd need extra circuitry with the 153IR.

I haven't looked at the Z-Stuff Controller, don't know about that one.

Here is a thread on the Dallee Stop and Go.  There is a more advanced system with more parts that also does a station stop.   Basic requirement is about 12' of track and (2ft) sensing zones at either end.  We (Fort Pitt High Railers) got it to work in 8ft

It requires a trolley that operates. Forward/Neutral/Reverse/Neutral.............

 Once set up and operating, this back and forth trolley system operated for entire Train shows with out any adjustments. We destroyed a bump and go trolley just about every train show.   Mike CT
