poly ISO foam

Hi has anyone used Polyiso foam?  I had never heard of it until I purchased a couple of sheets of the blue stuff and the guy said Polyiso was cheaper and was it ever.  The blue cost me 40 bucks for a 2" 2' x 8' sheet.  The poly stuff was less than 30 bucks and it was 2" 4' x 8'.  I don't like the feel of it it is covered wiht a paper type coating but I am thinking that it will be covered with scenery and I don't have to touch it after it is covered.  Any ideas would be very helpful.  Oh I am in California if that makes any difference.

Is this foam pink or is it coated with Tianfoil paper? If it is coated with the foil paper you need to get rid of that foil for two resons the first being anything you glue to it won't stick and one little peice of the foil hits your track it can short out something. I have experience with the last. We hear atleast in So Cal cannot get the blu foam and HD only carries 1/2" and 2" pink foam and not every HD so far I have only found it here in San Pedro. They told me that they can only oroder it in mass quanities.  It took forever to track this stuff down but a 4X2X8 sheet of 2" foam is 29.99 so not too bad.Originally Posted by orkybrown:

No this is not the pink or blue type foam.  It is covered with a paper not the foil.  It is more the consistency or feel of the floral foam (green) they use to make flower arrangements.  I am sure the paper covering is not water proof.  I looked it up on the net and they call it Poly ISO.  I think it is used for roofing insulation.

The "Iso" in PolyIso is short for isocyanate or isocyanurate. Its dust can be an irritant which could cause problems in carving. I wouldn't try using any kind of hot knife on the stuff because of the cyanide derivation.

 

But then again all polyurethanes and all sorts of products ranging from car seats to foam mattresses to spandex (!) all contain isocyanates, so it's not like it's deadly if you just take care.

I bought the 4' X 8' X 2" green colored foam from Lowes.  Home Depot carries the 2' X 8' X 2" pink stuff.  I don't remember who carries the Blue Stuff.  The green board feels like it has a plastic coating on it.  I covered all my foam board with a self sticking mesh that looks like the fiber mesh drywall tape, but it comes in a 36" wide roll.  I'm planning to put a skim coat of Structolite sometime this week.

Head over to HD and get the pink stuff if you can. It is easy to work with and reasonably priced. I would avoid anything that is toxic. Where did you find the blue foam in CA?Originally Posted by orkybrown:
