Just picked up a Lionel Postwar Trolley at a yard sale.  The unit runs in one direction, but when it hits the bumper and the frame slides to change directions, it will not reverse and run in the opposite direction.

I've cleaned everything including the brushes and slide contacts.  The wiring looks good as well.

I'm thinking I have a bad field winding.

Any thoughts and help would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance

After double checking that the slide plate is indeed making contact on both sets of field winding contacts, the easiest thing to do is to reverse the field windings on the contact plate, and see if the motor runs on the other field winding. If it does run, recheck the slide and contact plate. If it does not run, then you know the second field winding may be bad.

i have had the same thing happen with a gang car of mine.  What was happens ing is when it hit the bumper to switch directions it would stop and not go the other direction so I took a thick piece of double sided tape and put it inside of the bumper (between the frame and the bumper on the bumper). When the bumper hits the thick tape keeps it from the bumper going beyond the contact points.  Try it and see if it works.  I did this two years ago and it is running great.
