Thank you !!! I thought it was me.
The trucks on my FM demonstrator are very noisy compared to my
other FM trucks ...there is also about 6 more gears
under that truck which is probably accounting for the noise !

On the newer trucks, the pin is set in Locktite inside a plastic bushing.  I am not a fan of that.

I seen one with the pin out and the idle gear free rotating between the other gears.

 

I would recommend using a shim stock to set the depth of the pin.  Press once, with no pulling back out.

George, I just went through that with a very good friend's engine.  By using that plastic sleeve that bottoms out when inserting, it controls how far the pin that holds the gear can go in.  They use Locktite to hold the pin inside the plastic insert.  The same Locktite we used to build engines (Corvette) in the past.  Give me back the old metal to metal force fit on the pin any day.

  Also I do not over grease the gears, just a light film of lubriplate on the teeth and a drop of 0W 20 mobil one at the gear idler shafts...very quiet compared to my "rattle" days.
