Just bought this Lionel 8" tunnel of eBay.
I believe it is a 118? I do not think it is a 118L (Lighted tunnel).
The question I have is why is the inside of the tunnel covered and some other 118 are not?
The other question is why are there two slots on both the tunnel legs only on one side and what were they used for?
I can not find any information from my personal Library.

I just did some more searching on the web and found that I have the 118 tunnel and not the 118L lighted tunnel. The 118L tunnel has a house embossed on the side of the tunnel with a light in the middle.
Still trying to find the reasoning for:
Why is the inside of the tunnel covered and some other 118 are not?
&
Why are there two slots on both the tunnel legs only on one side and what were they used for?

I pulled out another 118 tunnel that I had buried and this one is a earlier version with the double wall construction.
This one also has the slots on the bottom at one end like the other picture posted above.
Did this tunnel come with instructions when it was sold and if so does anyone have the instructions? The reason for the slots may be listed in those instructions.

Does anyone have the "Greenbergs Guide to Lionel Prewar Parts and Instruction Sheets" to see if the 118 tunnel is there and a explanation of the slots on the bottom?

Hi,

Can you post a different pic?

I was unable to view the old ebay listing photo.

I will take some pictures tonight

Here are the pictures. of the tunnel.

Just curious what the 4 slots on the one side were used for.

I have two tunnels like this with the slots and the inside metal wall.

I have the same tunnel but is a later tunnel with no inside metal wall and it does not have any slots.

Maybe Lionel offered a bracket that would of held two tunnels together so that it would be easier to line up on a track? If so does anyone have these brackets of a instruction sheet for this?

Very Interesting! Certainly looks like a 118, but I have never seen a double-walled Lionel Tunnel.

Does it have the Lionel Emblem in the Keystone at the top of the arch?

Yes it is Lionel I purchase each separately, just wondering what the slots on each end were used for. These are the 118 and are the older ones with the inside metal wall, you can see this wall in the photo. I have a later version with no indie wall and that does not have the slots. Would you or anyone else know what the slots were used for?
