I have the subject engine and everything works, except the rear coupler and the smoke unit. Because of these issues I think the problem is with one of the boards that control the unit. Does anyone have the wiring diagram for this unit so I can trace the wiring diagram and see if the board is the problem.

I would do the R2LC reset John posted, if that does not resolve the issue, try swapping the R2lC, or at least removing it and reseating it.  The tender gets the signal for the coupler via IR tether and the AD-20 processes it.  Do the lights on tender work?

 

Coupler can be a separate issue and so can smoke.  The switch for smoke must be on even in TMCC mode to operate, also if in TMCC mode must be turned on with AUX1 9.   G

I tried the reset twice and did not work. The tender light works correctly. Off when going forward and on backing up. You hear the uncoupling sound when you press the uncoupling button. I also reseated the R2lC board and did an engine reset. The same results. When I did a reset and punched 74, the engine made a noise for each number punched. 

You did push AUX1 before you punched in the 74, right?

 

Since the IR link is obviously working, it appears you have two things to address.  As I said, the coupler has nothing to do with the smoke, and the smoke on your locomotive is driven directly from the R2LC.

 

For the smoke, it's either the R2LC, the wiring and smoke switch, or the smoke unit.

 

For the coupler, I'd be looking at the wiring in the tender and the AD-20 board.

 

It is possible to repair the R2LC smoke driver and the AD-20 driver if they turn out to be the issue.

On your coupler, the AD20A IR decoder board controls the coupler  as John stated.  Look at the motherboard where the coupler plugs in and do a continuity test to the back of the encoder board.  Pins 1&2 are hot and pins 7&8 are ground.  Check continuity between the board and plug.  You could possibly have a blown trace on the motherboard.

 

The coupler being bad is the probable situation.  Very remote chance of a defective AD20A board.
