I will look at a collection over the weekend that includes a Railking EP-5 with Proto 1. It was made in 1999. I understand that there are major battery problems with Proto 1 that could cause the boards to burn out. I do not own any MTH engines. What do I look for to avoid the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dick,
Just make sure you put a new, fully charged battery in before you test the engine....(and hope the seller didn't do that with the old battery too).
Don't put power to it with the original battery still in there. That's when the problems occur.
Hopefully, that engine isn't a key part of the collection. Proto 1's are always a crapshoot as to what you will get.

Thanks Jim. There is no way I will be able to test it. It is on Martha's Vineyard, where my daughter lives. It looks like the daughter of the original owner has it. It is in a collection of assorted older postwar low priced Lionel and old HO stuff. If I can get the whole thing cheap, I may do the crapshoot.
