Using the variable circuits on a TIU, causes AC wave form distortions, which get worse as the difference between input and output voltages increases.  This causes the loco to run faster than you would expect at the voltage stated on the readout.  Only cure is to reduce input voltage, which you can't do with a brick.

GRJ, I am deeply hurt.  You have cut me to the quick.  To say that I, a serious devotee of the steel rail and the mighty iron horse, would jest, even on one day each year.  Oh how long must I suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fame?
