ps2 engine dead

That is an early PS-2 with a 5 volt board.  If you still have the old white battery you are in a bad way.  If so, please replace with a new battery and start over.

No joy.  I installed a new, freshly charged battery but the engine did not respond to an ADD ENGINE command or a conventional transformer power.  Can you suggest my next step?

When you do this, it should be the ONLY engine on the track and I believe you need to be using a TIU addressed as TIU #1.

The engine won't do anything in conventional, so I don't think the recover will work.

Probably not, it was just a Hail Mary pass. \

The symptoms are very suggestive of how I've seen a number of these die, fire it up and odd things happen, and then nothing!  It usually happens after an extended period of not running.

Make sure the 7 pin connector is installed fully.  Make sure red and black wires are connected via wire nuts to the truck wires.  If all that is good board probably died.  G

Thank you for your suggestions.  I tried all of them and still nothing.  I guess its new board time.  I really like this engine pulling my MTH New Haven freight set so what board do you suggest I install.  I am a skilled electronics technician so I can do it myself.

Get a PS-2 Diesel Kit and swap the connectors from the 5V board to the 3V board.  Load the upgrade sound file.  Use the speaker, battery and battery harness from the upgrade kit.   G

When you are swapping the connector shells, use a little heat to soften them just a bit, makes it much easier to remove and replace them without damaging the boards.

GRJ, what do you use to apply heat, and where?  A good addition to the forum would be some step-by-step pix of the process of switching connectors. 

My asking this is purely selfish---I have 3 old PS2 5-volt locos chugging along.

I use a heat gun to lightly warm the connector shell, I just direct it from the top of the pins.  The object of the exercise it to soften the plastic a bit so you can move it off the pins.  The pins have a dimple that holds the plastic shell on, without heat it's harder to pry them off, and of course more likely to damage the boards in the process.

I leave it to you to add the step-by-step connector swap when you do yours.

Guys, did we have him delete it in his remote and then try to add it back in???

I deleted it in the remote and it won't add back in because the engine doesn't respond "no engine on track".

It didn't run in conventional so that is a bad sign.  G

Hook the engine up to the dcs loader  (only if handy) and try to up load the file. It may  give you an engine ID number. If it finds the engine I would then  try downloading the sound file or perhaps a different one.
