Need suggestions on how I can set up my conventional loop to operate for a preset amount of time at the simple push of a button. I have a Z4000 connected to Gargraves track and would like to set it up so visitors merely push a button and trains would run for a predetermined amount of time, say 5 minutes. At the end of 5 minute run trains would stop and 5 minute timer would reset awaiting the next button push. Any ideas?? Thank-you very much for any and all input and help. Houndsvillebob.

I think you and I are working with the same idea in mind. The layout I'm gradually putting together will be in a grocery store, of all places.
Some good fellow on this board suggested www.dallee.com, which I did, and they probably have just what you are looking for.
At the RR Museum of Long Island on the Lionel Visitor Center Layout we've been using the Altronix 6062 for the last few years with no problems. When guests push the button the Mine train starts running and the lights in the mine come on for 2 minutes.
You could adjust the time from 1 sec to 60 min.
Amazon has them: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UT...f=pd_sl_4uemd7ha68_p
houndsville bob,
Steve is right on the money the Altronix 6062 is absolutely the right piece of electrical gear you need.

In addition to the Dallee and Amazon selections, there is a huge selection of timer relays on ebay. Many have been discussed here in different threads and in great detail. A search here for 'timer' or something similar might be a start, there are a great many threads on the subject.
