Woven fishing line, or very heavy coat thread I think would work.

 Rolls of thick woven fishing line isn't real cheap considering what you need.

  I think I could spare a few feet of some and a few stamps to send it with.

Here's the Olsen's #342 Repair Pages, should give you the info you need to repair it.

20# fly line backing works well for a replacement string and will last.  You can purchase it in small spools in a sporting goods store carrying fly fishing supplies.

Thanks for the replies, I have access to fishing line was just wondering if thats what was used.  I had the Olsens material but my concern was actually trying to do the work and I was a little confused over following what was described.  I found a website that has Jim Barrett's repair videos and plan to order the one that shows how to repair the 342. Todays fishing lines are a bit thinner than they used to be. Mine has a white braided line, and if I'm not mistaken is thicker than my 30lb modern braided line.

But I'm pretty sure most any would work.

What you are looking for is 345-80 De-Waxed 12 Lb Test Braided Nylon Line. Ordinary fish line won't work. Basically what you need is about 12" of line, a small ruler and a small awl or even a darning needle to open the old eyelet. If you need some explicit instructions, shoot me an email and I'll do them for you.
