Bob, or anyone, in a previous thread about 3rd Rail's planned Harriman switcher you said you thought the wheel treads on the Stephenson engine would work on 3 rail track.

I just noticed he is thinking a producing a NYC B11 0-6-0. Since NYC is my primary interest in three rail I am planning to get one if they are produced. Do you think the loco wheels would work unmodified or would different tires wth larger flanges be required? 

I am betting you have machined some driver tires yourself. Would you use something like 303 stainless, another stainless alloy, bronze, or nickle silver?

I am not an expert on tinplate wheel contours.  I suspect that tubular track and switches require the "pizza cutter" style.  If you have no switches and are using T section track (more like an I beam) you should have no trouble.

 

Yes, I have machined more than my share of tires.  Boring! But I rarely consider anything other than iron.  Steel is a second choice, but not stainless.

 

Hi Rail uses traction tires.  Most 2- railers blanch at the thought.  Good grey iron seems to grab the rail and hold on, even when polished.  Stainless, or plated will simply slip.
