We bought our set #31960 in 2004. Since then we have added the Diner Car #25134, Baggage Car #25135, Hot Chocolate Car #25186 and the Tom Hanks Announcement Car #36875.
How many other cars have been made to go with this set??
Thanks.

I believe a boxcar has been made.
I would opt to buy a more recent production PE loco and keep the original in the set. The PE from 04 has a smaller motor. Mine from 04 does not pull 6 cars strongly anymore.
Well, unless you're running 13 Polar Express cars to North Pole City, you'll need to add a few to be "prototypical.

I didn't know they went to a bigger motor! Thanks! Any other changes to the locomotive??

Marty - Was there a period with the larger motor prior to Lion Chief?
Sounds interesting, Thanks!!

To be "prototypical," you'd have to continually change the length of the train form 5 to 13-14 cars, depending on the scene.
And if you follow the book, you need a 4-6-2.
Rusty
Just the Lionchief Jeff, from What I have seen they are nice locos with lots more power
To give you a summary
As for the Lion Chief locomotive, I agree with Tim. Best part of the set now. I had the 2004 locomotive and rebuilt it twice before selling it for parts. There was a large motor GenII version of this locomotive prior to the Lion Chief.
I have a gen II that I've added TMCC, RailSounds, MTH fan driven smoke, and a Super-Chuffer to. I'm looking for a few cars as well.
yea the hobo car, Thomas Kinkade
