Hi guys! I was just wondering whats the best way to clean my old style tubular track? I use a green pad that a older gentleman gave me at my train dealer shop. Well the tube track inhave someone painted the sides gray what's the best way of getting that off? My additional question is I bought a pre-war lionel 1688E and on one side I'm missing the red lantern, I was just wondering if anyone had a spare they would maybe kindly give me. I don't want to go on eBay pay $5 and then pay $5 for shipping. Money is tight right now and I don't want to be more of a burden to my family just for a piece of plastic.

Patrick,

Many times some folk paint the sides of tube track to hide surface rust. If you want to remove the paint, use lots of, "elbow grease". You can use a green pad like you use to clean your track. I would suggest to leave it.

For your red lantern, I would let the folks on the Tinplate Forum know. Lastly, if that doesn't work place a listing in the WTB Forum explaining your need and that you're not able to buy one. I already checked my parts drawer for a lantern, however, that space was empty.

Thank you so much for the advice and trying to look for one!

And one other question, is the lionel 1688E tinplate? And do you know how to get rust off the side bars and drive rods?

Patrick,

Hope you have not been waiting this long for an answer! Just happened to stumble upon your topic.

Option #1: My friend does amazing things with his wire wheel on his bench sander.

Option #2: If you have a Dremel Tool with a wire wheel attachment, you can do the same on a smaller level.
