Recreating a Famous Photo - NS poses the 611 with a smaller Lionel cousin

Inspired by the famous photo of the 746 and a J Class, on the day we towed 611 out of Roanoke we had an opportunity while the engine was at Shaffer's Crossing to recreate the image.

Thanks to the Railyard Hobby Shop in Roanoke, the let me borrow a Lionel Legacy J Class and some track was borrowed. I thought it would be a neat tribute to my favorite photo in the All Aboard book, and a nod to the new Legacy class Js.

With permission from the Shaffer's crossing Foreman, along with NS Senior Foreman of Steam Bob Saxton, Scott Lindsay of Steam Operation Corp, and the photo talents of Casey Thomason and the blessing of Corporate Communications Director Stacey Hugo  we made this photo happen.

NS officially published the photo today.

The fella on the left is Scott Lindsay, the guy who managed the 611's overhaul. Scott also set up the 765's running gear during her overhaul. To this day that running gear turns like a swiss watch.

 

The fella on the right is Bob Saxtan, Nofolk Southern's Senior General Foreman - Steam. He was at the throttle of the 611 on the test run the other day. Bob is a very experienced railroader and steam locomotive guy. He supervises all the steam operations on NS. He has also run the 765 a few times.

 

These two men have had a LOT to do with the success of the Norfolk Southern 21st Century Steam Program.
